explanation unclear of third rule - when are there 11 players on the goal line on a penalty corner? is this referring to the defense or offense?

Why is the FIH doing this, how often do you see FIFA changing the rules of soccer? This gives the FIH a real lack of credibility.

In the original article, the third rule refered to the defense on the LONG corner. In this article They talk about the penalty corner. Confusing. I'll try and find out more.
If for the long corner, it is going to be a very dangerous rule, with players running out while the corner is being taken and deflected.

Rules changes are not at all clear. I have been playing international hockey now for 11 years and see continual change of rules. Keep no off0side and bugger the rest of the changes. Differing hockey styles from various countries playing against each other keeps the game alive and exciting. If you want more goals play with less players entirely, htis creates more space all over the field. The umpires/players and spectators find it hard enough as it is dealing with all the rules and their interpretations. More goals doesn't necessarily mean more exciting.

Why does the FIH want to change the game anyway! The game IS fluent and entertaining! Why else would hockey be the runner-up when it comes to ticket-sales at Sydney 2000! These new rules sound even more rediculous than the last trials they had during the Champions Trophy in 1999! This won't improve the game, it will only ruin the 'identity' of the sport! Just leave the rules alone for the coming 5 years and see how the game will develop on its own! Instead of changing the rules, try and invest in the training of referees (give them a decent pay and make sure they will improve)! This will probably achieve the goals they want achieve in a better way than will be achieved with these new rules!!!

I wonder if this will be a mandatory trial in the US, where the NCAA will be going to full international rules in 2001? Anyone?

Isn't it ridiculous? Who said they were 11 players on a goal line during a penalty corner execution? The author must have mistaken hockey and soccer, but there are no pen corners there. THAT'S NOT ALL. In a previous article I read that allowing players to shoot on goal from outside the shooting circle will result in less injuries. People!!!!!! Am I crazy or these people who wrote this. Do you really want to destroy our game? I would propose one small change only, which wouldn't change the game itself. I think the game should be continued despite the final whistle if the ball remains within the shooting circle. This would help to avoid the situation when a referee can stop final action and make a game more "nervous" and attractive. Think about such absurds like the timer and not about making hockey a big mess.

Hockey has been continuously evolving. Eventhough these rules will make the gam hellish for defenders, you must all agree that games will be MUCH more entertaining to watch.

For crying out loud, leave things alone!
My wife won't come and watch hockey because she can't grasp the rules, what chance have we got for introducing new players and TV to the sport if keep mucking about with it!
At what point will the bureaucrats come out of their little shells and ask the players what they want, after all we're the ones that have to play the game.
And that includes all levels not just the International Demi-gods

To me, the rules change weigh two factors; the risk of injury to opponents inside the 25 vs. the need for the goalkeeper to rebound a strike on goal - basically, put the ball on goal, force the keeper to play it. Unfortunately, today's keeper equipment is designed to maximize the velocity off of the rebound - unless the gk is allowed to trap the ball (as in ice hockey) - does anybody really want to be the "monkey in the middle" when the ball is struck at the 23 with a composite stick?? In a third division game? Or mixed league? Or youth league?

FIH has become a research instute who experiments on animals to find remedy for the sick patients.
We need not change the rules every three to six months to attract crowd. This not will confuse the players and umpires but will also confuse the crowd.

I they are going to go ahead with the 25yard rule then they need to do what we do and that is reduce the number of players from 11 to eight so that injury risk is cut-out to the defenders in the situation where you have a forward hitting the 25 and smashing the ball at the general goal area. Please you people in charge wake up you are making it more and more dangerous for defenders like myself to have a equal footing against attackers. We love the game the way it is so listen to the players and hear what we ahve to say not what you feel is right for yourselfs.

Trial Rules
Keep the scoring zone inside the circle.
Try the 8 defender rule but keep the long corner as a "free hit". The removal of the 3 defenders automatically opens up the defence area, thus fulfilling the desired object of opening up the game.
The really "old" long corner used to be a "setpiece" but they got rid of that because there were too many setpieces! Why are they bringing them back???
No offside and the "new" obstruction rule are fantastic. I can only dream of playing with these rules 20 years ago!!

are the rules committee reacting to player concerns about the way the game is headed, or are they trying to justify the very existence of their committee? talking and listening to players and umpires alike shows almost complete dislike for these changes i have yet to meet anybody who is in favour

 And all this time (33 years) I was trying to keep the ball out of goals? Obviously I was wrong in thinking that a good game is a close game. You know, I never have been interested in Basketball so why is the FIH (MY ELECTED CONTROLLING BODY) trying to change MY game to basketball scores? Is it reasonable to assume that the president of my club, the president of the local association, the president of the state association and the president of my national controlling body will hear that I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THESE RULE CHANGES. Darn right they will and they are accountable to me (and you too). So if you dont like what these rocket scientists are doing to our sport then tell them by e-mail, by fax, and in person.

Rules
Some confusion here - the articles I'm sure refers to long corners. The older players among us will remember that long corners used to be taken from the base line with the defence on the goal line (I forget how many were allowed - probably 5). This is the game going full circle! Shooting from inside the 25 yd line is a nonsense - it will just lead to ridiculously speculative shots and make the game boring. If you want more goals, make the goals bigger! As for the 8 player rule - why not make it an 8-a-side game. Even better, reduce it to 6 and let's play it on ice and all wear padding.............

Why don't we go the whole hog and change all the rules every season? We could vote on the rules we want to see in and against those we don't. Each rule could be presentes as a multiple choice with the one with most votes being adopted for that year. HA-HA I think not!
LEAVE THE GAME ALONE!
Let's get to grips with the rules we have got and not add more confusion. It takes half a season for players to finally get used to most new rules and a lot of club level umpires a lot longer. GIVE US A CHANCE TO ENJOY HOCKEY WITHOUT CONSTANTLY CHANGING THE GAME!!
We have rules and interpretations that are currnetly unpopular from recent rule changes - let's get rid of those rather than introducing more. (I refer in particular to the reverse stick shot using the edge of the stick. We have seen serious injuries amongst players from this one, yet the Rules Board seem to think that its allright!!!!!)

Stupid
The FIH wants to create more goals in the game, yet they want to allow eight people on the goal line in a short corner!! where is the logic? Also, allowing more chances of goals will make smaller teams feel less good up against bigger clubs with more experienced players which, in turn, may end up in loosing youth from the games as they wil feel like they are rubbish plaers if they are loosing by huge margins all of the time.

we see no reason to change rules. If you need to change something , then make hockey ground playing area bigger and goal post bigger . You will get more goals and less crowding.
