Pamela Magill today resigned herself to the relative anonymity of the bench for Saturday's big Winemark Ulster Shield clash with Randalstown at the Antrim Forum.

The Irish international is being merely realistic as she is heading for foreign parts very soon.

Pamela will be going to Australia very shortly for a break before she takes up the offer of a new job back home.

But she's perfectly happy with the scenario which will allow Pegs coach Erika Henry to experiment and suss out her options ahead of one of her key players' impending absence.

"It's obvious that Erika will want to try things out and see how other players can adapt to the role when I'm away," said Pamela today.

"It's a pity to miss such a big game but it's merely circumstancial and I understand the situation,"

Pamela has obviously come a long way since the memorable occasion when she once was famously quoted less diplomtically.

When she was a 15 year-old and asked how the 'big-two' game would go she responded: "We're going to stuff them !"

Time has taught her to be more circumspect although it has to be said Pegs did 'stuff' them 2-1 on that occasion!

Diplomacy now prevails, though, as far as the engaging 24 year-old midfielder is concerned.

'Town have a plethora of teenagers in their line-up but they won't be easy for the team that lost to them at the semi-final stage last season.

"It's going to be a tough game for us that's for sure and they've a good record against us," Pamela added.

'Town coach Johneen Black is treating the contest in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

"They are a good hockey playing team and we are looking forward to the game very much," he added.

Elswhere on Saturday, Ballymoney play Portadown and the Co Antrim girls should progress in that one.

Victorians will be taking time out from their relegation battle when they play Ards and Omagh face Parkview.

In the Senior Plate there are five games down for decision, four in the first round and one in the second.

Winemark Ulster Shield 3rd round: Omagh v Parkview (Omagh LC, 2.30pm), Ards v Victorians (Ards LC, 2.30pm, Randalstown v Pegasus (Antrim Forum, 2.30pm), Ballymoney v Portadown (Joey Dunlop Centre, 2.30pm).

Senior Plate 1st round: Owls v Cookstown (Paisley Park, 2.30pm), Knock v Coleraine (Queen's 2.30pm), Enniskillen v Priorians (Irvinestown, 2.30pm), Ballyclare v Civil Service (Valley LC, 2.30pm). 2nd round: North Down v Ballymena (Comber LC 2.30pm).

umpires
it would be nice if when the fixtures are being published, that you could also publish the umpires,so we would know who is refereeing each match.

Agree with ahhh
Yes ... the standard of umpiring is poor - nationwide. I believe the problem is that most umpires no longer play, so are not being coached week in week out. For instance, I was coached "shaving" last night and I'm expecting to be blown for "tackling from behind" this Sat. Also, they don't look to the other umpire (who probably saw it) when players appeal for an infringement. But worst of all, they blow for dangerous play (dangerous to earthworms that is) when a player skillfully lifts the ball or, even worse, takes a legitimate shot at goal. I just think our umpires are old fashioned and are slow to interpret the modern game.

yes and there are also the umpires who think they are god personified and if you even glance at them they are fuming! our umpiring is terrible in Ulster but i suppose we have to be thankful as no one else will do it although it is annoying when some dodgy decisions can cost teams very vital points! ok mistakes happen but in our premier leagues it is week in week out

For God's sake, in what other sport are the umpires/referees/officials listed in the fixtures? None! Do you want each member of the crowd listed in the results? Although I suppose it wouldn't take up much space in hockey.

hhhmmmm, controversial
may i just add that we umpires get slated every week. We don't see things, we miss penalty corners blah blah blah. Without us the games wouldn't go ahead and then we get moaned at again because we have lives outside of hockey, oh dear. The standard of umpiring in ulster is excellent and if some of the players lifted a whistle we would all be shafted, they think they know the rules but let me assure over half the players in ulster don't, except the 'big' teams. so, instead of slagging us of, please read the current rules, found on hockey.ie, or ifh website, then we can all enjoy our hockey on a saturday!

UMPIRING
I reckon that 'pundit' is actually an umpire who wants to be named in articles to massage their already HUGE egos. . . . . and I believe that their egos explain some of the diabolical decisions that good players are subjected to every match.
I know from personal experience in the womens' game that you LITERALLY cannot LOOK in the umpire's direction without getting at least a warning while a simple question merits a card.
I agree with Cliff's comments about the referees being out of touch with the modern game and believe that their insecurities about decisions they have made cause them to 'panic' into further dodgy decisions and cheap cards. We are all there to enjoy the sport so surely you should be allowed to question decisions in a mannerly, calm way?
What are others' views?

You won't believe it but ...
Last Monday night following a free out after defending a short corner, a current Irish International (who shall remain nameless) took a quick free-out from inside her own circle. Yes, the ball was slightly moving (albeit it at 1 km/h - now that we've gone metric down south), not advantageous though, and the umpire (nameless for her own safety) blew for a short corner saying "tut tut and as an Irish International you should know better". You call that umpiring? Such arrogance? Get with it Ger or give it up dearie ... give it up ... while on the other hand Clare Kelly allowed Clodagh Grealy clear a ball (again from a short corner turnover) that all saw was certainly moving, Loreto broke and scored to go 2 nil up on Old Alex last Sunday in the Leinster Cup ... now that's modern umpiring. Let the players play for goodness sake.

Mens Hocky
Every week the Men's umpires are listed with the fixtures in Ulster!!! So Stoney....it's not so drastic or hard. It's nice to know who is umpiring because that can sometimes influence tactics - for example if its a weaker umpire i would encourage my players to appeal more in training and build up to the game. If its a firm umpire i would be encouraging discipline and no appealing.

all those who are complaining about the standard of umpiring - what r u doing to help the situation? planning to pick up the whistle once you hang up your hockey stick???? i very much doubt it. Maybe if some of the better players in the league did start umpiring once they retired there would be a higher standard of umpiring, but til then we need to be grateful and thankful that theres people out there willing to umpire the game so we can carry on playing it. On the point about naming the umpires in the paper - of course it'd be helpful, sure the men do it all time whats the big deal??
