The latest in the list of celebrities supporting the Premier Hockey League are Sunny and Bobby Deol, who shot a promotional film for PHL in Mumbai recently.

The film will be soon aired on ESPN and STAR Sports and on other channels of the STAR network.

While the Deol brothers reserve their comments on which team they back, they come in support of a domestic league for hockey as will be seen in the film.

Earlier, Sonu Nigam lent his voice for an anthem prepared specially for the PHL. Spin wizard Harbhajan Singh couldn’t stay neutral what with Sachin Tendulkar coming out aggressively in support of the Maratha Warriors.

Bhajji has thrown a challenge to Tendulkar and has even set his eyes on Tendulkar’s Ferrari car in case his team Sher-E-Jalandhar beats the Maratha Warriors.

Badminton star Pullela Gopichand will root for his home team, the Hyderabad Sultans.

The tournament kicks in Hyderabad on January 13. Matches will be telecast live on STAR Sports.

Match Commentary
I read somewhere that there will only be Hindi commentary for the PHL. This is not good news as a big cross section of the viewers are from South India apart from the north east. Three teams in Tier 1 are from Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalor which are predominantly English speaking, apart from the entire Northeast from where the fortunes of Imphal Rangers will be followed with keen interest.

It is indeed very surprising that an international channel like ESPN should take this decision. English commentary must be there. Even the likes of DD do this. ESPN should ideally give us the choice of either English or Hindi commentary on different channels. If that is not possible then for heaven's sake please don't push the Hindi with those rubbish ESPN commentators that they had sitting at Singapore for the India-Pakistan and India-Spain series.

Correct Vincent
I agree that ESPN should have the PHL commentary in English.
Maybe they can balance it with a little Hindi. But ideally, they should telecast English and Hindi commentary on different channels as they did the Chinese football in Mandarin and English.

Terrible English Commentary
I watched the PHL telecast of the inaugural game on Star Sports and was happy that the commentary was in English. But that was about all. Someone called Chuck was the commentator who made a total cock-up. His American accent was not clear, he did not know the players names nor the game or rules.
ESPN must remove him immediately and put someone else whose prounciation is clear and a person who knows the game. Why can't they have an Indian like Anupam Gulati for this job or Charlesworth or Nick Irvine ?
