All-Ireland League and cup champions Instonians, Ulster Premier League champions Annadale and current Premier leaders Banbridge all crashed to home defeats in the Powerade Anderson Cup pool games on Saturday.
The trio resent losing but are trying to stay positive as they finalise preparations for this Saturday's Irish Senior Cup 4th round ties.
So exactly what can be positive about Saturday's setbacks?
Well, it means that the video footage taken by representatives from the visiting southern teams, who provide the opposition this weekend, won't benefit them too much!
Inst let slip a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 to Bangor at Queen's in Pool A but at least Senior Cup opponents Dublin YMCA won't have gleaned much from what was a ragged display by Paul Hollway's lads.
Bangor had taken the lead through Jamie McAuley only for Michael Adams and Andrew Cousins to put the Belfast lads ahead.
But Nicky Blease levelled before Chris Cargo clinched a late winner.
Annadale take on Aer Lingus this weekend and, again, the Dubliners won't have learned much from Dale's 3-2 home defeat in Pool B.
Annadale started slowly, found themselves two down through goals from Timmy Cockram and Ivan Steen, and although they levelled through Ian Hamilton and Chris Jackson, they were hit by a late winner from Cockram, with another of his trademark penalty corners.
Banbridge's single goal home defeat in Pool A against Civil Service comes as a boost to Cork C of I, particularly as the deep south lads went on to beat arch rivals Cork Harlequins in the Peard Cup final over the weekend.
Bann just couldn't break down what is normally a leaking Civil Service defence, with penalty corner ace Ross McCandless among the culprits, failing to convert any of the numerous set pieces awarded.
They ended up losing out to a Chris Barnes effort.
In the other Anderson Cup Pool B game, Premier bottom team Raphoe got a confidence boost with a 1-1 draw at Cookstown where Chris McAuley and Keith Black traded goals.
In Senior One, there is no change at the top after Kilkeel, Mossley, North Down and Belfast Harlequins all registered wins.
Kilkeel hit seven against Cliftonville, which might put the wind up Dublin side Monkstown - coached by Ulsterman Stephen Jackson - when they travel to the Mournes this weekend in the cup.
Mossley chalked up a fine 4-2 win at Antrim; North Down hit PSNI for six and Belfst Harlequins won 2-0 at South Antrim to keep the pressure on.
The Newry and Ballynahinch game was postponed.

It would seem that the 'fortress' Lough Moss needs repairing, as they went down to Garvey on Sat, and I believe that they also lost to Garvey in the Junior 1 clash preceeding that game! Garvey dominated the first half and let Dale back into it in the second by making a few odd changes. Dont know what exactly Shaw brings to the Annadale team, apart from moaning, winge-ing, complaining etc. He was still moaning to umpires after the game in the leisure centre which is out of order!

Not sure we need to worry about the 'fortress' just yet, only Anderson Cup after all. Agree that Shaw needs to stop moaning as he is at it every week, he should concentrate on his hockey! Some interesting results at the weekend, some shocks, although cant see the same happening this weekend!

Shaw
Moaning has always been part of his game - not a particularly good part of it either. He should concentrate at his hockey as when he plays well he is a great player - although havnt seen much evidence of it this year!

Seven Leinster clubs sitting on the wall ...
Seven Leinster Clubs in the last 16.
Will any survive to the last 8 ? Monkstown perhaps ?
Lisnagarvey -v- Avoca
Cork Harlequins -v- Glenanne
Bandon -v- Clontarf
Annadale -v- Aer Lingus
Bangor -v- YMCA
Kilkeel -v- Monkstown
Cork C of I -v- Banbridge
Dublin Uni -v- Instonians
Yet another Ulster-Munster shootout.
Is it finally Cork Harlequins year ?
Whats happening ?

Shorty,
For this round only my predictions are....
I reckon Clontarf will get through this round in cork but they are not going to set this tournament alight. Bandon will be difficult opposition but I don't think they have the game to beat Clontarf.
Quins & Glananne have met in this competition before and they have not been easy games. But don't rule out the Glens they are more than a match for any team on their day. However if you were a betting man quins would be the clear favourites!
Kilkeel are in a good patch of form and are a decent side who like to play attacking hockey. They are scoring a few goals at the moment and will cause most sides a few problems. Monkstown will have a game on their hands but I reckon that they will just edge it over Kilkeel, especially with Jacko on the sidelines.
Avoca have a difficult day ahead of them, and keeping the score respectable will be their priority. Garvey cannot afford to be complacent though, they should not feel like all they have to do is turn up.
Aer Lingus have a tough game ahead of them too but I think this will be a lot closer game than most people will expect. But Annadale should be too strong for them an entertaining game I would Imagine.
I cannot say much about Bangor and YMCA other than let the best team win.
But for me the games of the day are definately Trinity & Instonians and the meeting of C of I & Banbridge.
I saw trinity's game in the last round Vs Railway Union and they were impressive, Blakeny scored 5 quality goals and it was probably the best perfdormance i've seen from a team of students in a long time. Instonians should not under estimate them, but I would imagine that they will be too strong for the students. A possible cracker in the making.
But the must see game of the day for me is C of I V Banbridge.
The sight of of young Magee up front is really exciting. The boy has bags of potential.
Of all the games this is probably the most evenly matched one. Mark Ruddle in the C of I goal is a quality GK and if he can stay injury free he has the potential to be a senior international no 1 for years to come.
I'd find it difficult to pick a winner here. If the ball and chain let's me I might just take a day trip to cork to see this game.
Hmm now do I have enough brownie points built up. That's the question.

Kilkeel v Monkstown
Reckon this one is all going to hinge on the umpires.
Kilkeel will play a very physical game from the off as they are used to getting away with it in Senior 1 due to weak umpires especially at Kilkeel.
If there is a Southern Upire involved here which I'm sure there will be or being a 4th round Irish Senior match 2 stronger Ulster umpires I can't see Kilkeel keeping 11 on the pitch.

Kilkeel V Monkstown
Ulsterman,
According to the IHA website, Kilkeel V Monkstown has two of the top Northern Umpires appointed to this game.
David Stewart & Chris McConkey.
Chris recently was made an FIH International Umpire, and by all accounts David is not too far away from making that grade also.
So I cannot imagine that they will let the teams get away with much!

To be honest I wouldn't set much store by who gets FIH international badges.
Its a question of who's ass u kiss.
Oh and by the way b4 u all start im not a frustrated umpire who has not got a badge ok.
As for David Stewart he is the most water weak and easily intimidated umpire since Warren McCully

4 certainties
4 certainties - Garvey, Inst, Annadale & Quins. The other 4 could go either way - I'll give them to the home teams - C of I, Bandon, Bangor & Kilkeel.
Munster will be delighted with 3 wins, satisfied with 2, disappointed with 1 & suicidal with 0.
Leinster numbers would be 4, 3, 1 & 0 - but no real hope of a semi contender.
Ulster numbers would be 6, 5, 4 & 3 - with extra delight if the two Munster teams go out.
Until tomorrow !
