THE national women's 2006 elite hockey team have been invited to compete in a four-nation tournament in Canada and will be flying to Winnipeg in June.
The invitation from the west came as a pleasant surprise for the women as their competitions were usually within the Asian region. The last time they competed in a similar tournament was last December in Singapore.

Malaysian Women's Hockey Association secretary S. Shamala said the association accepted the Canadians invitation with delight as the squad need as much international exposure as possible before the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

"This is the first time that a western side have invited us to play in a four-nation tournament and we are indeed very grateful as the women will gain much exposure from the trip," she said.

The last time the Malaysians met the Canadian side was in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Malaysia lost 1-4 to the Canadians.

Shamala added that playing with Canada in Manchester had fostered closer ties with them.

"They are a good side and we have a good rapport with them," she said.

The other two teams competing are yet to be confirmed. The tournament is scheduled from June 1-5.

winnipeg?
alright....nothing against the brothers and sisters in Winnepeg but are we doomed to empty stands again just like London.
I am sure the local volunteers will do their best but why are we holding a tournamnet in a place that has so little hockey community?
Interesting...

....
Yeah, I agree with the above comments, the turf in Winnipeg does not even have a watering system. How do the Canadian players feel about this? And I am assuming the Canadian senior womens team will be the team representing Canada? Anyone know anything about this??? I am very curious as to who the other 2 teams will be, most likely from the south, the Americans, the Chileans, the Cubans??
This should be an interesting tournament no doubt.
