COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Field Hockey has named former Dutch and Australian Olympic coach Terry Walsh to the position of Technical Director of High Performance.

“We are delighted to welcome Terry Walsh to USA Field Hockey as the Technical Director of High Performance” said Executive Director Sheila Walker. “This appointment marks a new era of field hockey in the USA. With an unparalleled passion for hockey and a world reputation in the sport technology arena, Terry will provide the U.S. national teams with cutting edge skill and expertise. We have long needed a ‘coaching guru’ to help our coaches and players achieve their highest potential, and Terry can do just that.”

The hiring of Walsh is part of USA Field Hockey’s commitment to returning to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1996. In the newly-created position, Walsh will oversee all aspects of USA Field Hockey’s men’s and women’s coaching and coach development while creating a system of play for the U.S. teams at all levels of the program. He will be involved in the final selection process as USA Field Hockey appoints a new head coach of the women’s national team.

“The challenge to develop a national coaching methodology combining knowledge and technology is going to be exceptional, and one that will require input from everyone already in the program,” said Walsh. “The number of athletes playing hockey in the USA provides a solid platform to develop international performances at a very high level. Indeed, international field hockey needs a strong USA. I am very privileged and excited about being given an opportunity to provide input.”

Walsh will get his first opportunity to meet the U.S. coaching community with a scheduled appearance at the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s annual convention, Jan. 7-9 in Providence, R.I. He will then work with the U.S. coaching staff during the women’s junior team selection A Camp and national residency team open trials, Jan. 13-17 at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

“I could not be more pleased about the hiring of Terry Walsh as Technical Director of High Performance for USA Field Hockey,” said USA Field Hockey President Sharon Taylor. “Terry’s qualifications and abilities are recognized and respected throughout the world. In bringing Terrry and his level of expertise to the U.S. program, we believe we will fulfill the commitment to success that we made at the end of the 2004 quadrennium.”

As head coach of the Netherlands men’s team, Walsh, 51, guided the Dutch to a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Classified as a Master Coach by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), Walsh previously served as head coach for the Australian men’s team from 1997-2000. He led Australia to a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. From 2001-03, Walsh served as an elite coaching consultant and software development manager for Sydney-based SportsTec, a leading provider of sports training technology. He also served as a consultant to the U.S. women’s team and former national team coach Pam Hixon at the 1996 Olympic Games. Hixon was instrumental in the technical director search process.

A three-time Olympian for Australia, Walsh earned a silver medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and helped the team to a fourth place finish at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. He also appeared in three World Cup tournaments for Australia including the gold medal winning team in 1986.

Currently a resident of Perth, Western Australia, Walsh will relocate to Virginia Beach and will be joined by his family in the United States as the scholastic year in Australia permits. Walsh and his wife Sharon are the parents of two boys, Jayme and Cayle.

“We set out to hire a coach for the women’s team, and we will complete that task in the near future with an individual who will take us to serious world-class competitiveness,” said USA Field Hockey’s Taylor. “But the opportunity that hiring Terry Walsh affords us is to build coaching in this country to a level which supports all of field hockey, and which will sustain our women’s and men’s teams and senior and junior teams from the developmental level up. This decision is a long-term commitment to field hockey excellence in the United States.”

USA Field Hockey is the National Governing Body for the sport of Field Hockey in the United States as recognized by the United States Olympic Committee, the International Hockey Federation and the International Olympic Committee. As such, USA Field Hockey is responsible for the training and selection of athletes for international competition as well as the promotion and development of the game of field hockey in the United States.

congratulations to Terry and USFHA
This is a fascinating hire. I watched the Australian team of which Terry was a part at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and followed his performance over the years up to the highlight for the Aussies of the 1986 World cup win. He has clearly had a variety of good coaching experiences since then.

It will be interesting to see how the "Technical Director of High Performance" role evolves and how he interacts with the coaches and the players. While there may be some issues to work out here, it shouldn't be anything insurmountable and it is great to have Terry as part of USA hockey.

Let's hope it contributes to a strengthening of the women's national team, a rebirth of the men's team and maybe even has some spin-off benefits for the growing indoor men's and women's programs.

Good luck, Terry. How about coming to watch the NAPL (North American Premier League-Indoor Hockey) weekend in Boston on Jan 22-23 to see a thriving example of men's and women's hockey in North America?

This SOUNDS like a great move by the USFHA - however, & I'm trying not to be too cynical, what impact will this have on the jobs of the future incoming women's coach & Shiv. If there are disagreements who has the final say?? For those that know anything about European soccer this system of a coach/manager & a director of football VERY RARELY work out happily for both parties...All I'm saying is I'd like to know exactly what his role will be before I start that this going to work!

But one would hope that the knowledge he can bring to the USA teams will prove to be hugely beneficial to the players!

Good Luck Terry!!

I also congratulate Terry and USFHA for his appointment.

Now will he be subjected to the same deal afforded other foriegners who preceded him? Will he get support from where it counts, the top?

If success is not immediated will he get the political runaround and eventually be forced to leave as in the past?

Will there be sound backup systems implemented to suport all in the elite programs based on his ideas?

Watch this space in a year or so for further developments!!!!

Olympic medals, Champions Trophies etc. come from long established coaching and development plans ... not from one person.

Will he be allowed to do the job? As a former acqaintence I hope the Malaysia experience is not repeated for Terry Walsh's sake and that he is permitted to do things his way and gets full backing from all sectors of the US structure. If so then in a few years there may be progress.

Unfortunately based on past episodes in US Hockey the chances are as slim as pork being eaten in Baghdad mosques!!!

with all the foreseen problems raised...

Coach v manager, problems with politics, and foreigners, and one person perhaps not being able to make a difference in a sea of flounderers...

Well, I definately think that Terry is the man for the job. His is politically very savy, not forceful but able to work out a solution that he knows is right, is able to conceed as well as fight for the right option, and he is also able to empower people. I wish him all the luck with this new venture.

Worldcup
Hallo . I think , the way for the USA to come in the top 12 at this world is : They must play at big tournaments . But the big tournements are only with 12 teams !! It`s a hard way !! We must make the worldcup bigger !!! If 20 or 24 teams take part at a worldcup , it is more possible to come in the top 10 !! BUT WE NEED A WORLDCUP WITH MORE NATIONS !! A BIGGER WORLDCUP !! A great opportunity--for support!
This is wonderful. As a father of two boys I'm glad to see that Mr. Walsh also has two boys--perhaps then he'll internalize what a truly uphill climb it is for young boys, and be in a position to dope slap those in the leadership that still don't get it. I jjust hope all the passive-aggressive (and not so passive agressive) baloney his kids will have to deal with won't so disgust him that he'll leave.

I do hope that while he still has his clear-view-of-a-stranger gestalt, can see the forrest, that he makes up a shopping list and lets the fh community know. Then comes the hard work of making it come true--it will need fundraising, because USFHA does not have a pot of gold, nor an extent club system as he found in Holland and Australia (by which I mean clubs that not only existed, weren't just there for the tournament, but practiced 4-5 days a week).

Certainly, I hope the reality of a sports system that is for the most part wholly school centered, and one that for the most part excludes one gender doesn't so totally depress him he goes catatonic. From what I"ve heard of him he won't, but it's a tall order. On the other hand, if he can turn around the US system, he can build a system anywhere. We'd better hope and pray then that the Chinese or others don't buy him away from us.

So while we are thinking positively, let us all pledge to support this willing lamb to a potential slaughter, this hero, and also pledge that we will do everything we can to help him meet his "shopping list." It's a unique opportunity, but if the community spends time complaining without helping, then it risks being wasted. Complain indeed, but help with solutions--and this person promises to be the best hope of addressing the many murmured complaints.

So why not start with listing your complaints/gripes on one side of a page and then for each one write one or more suggestions that are positive and specific. If you were head of USFHA and had your policies executed what would they be? How would you turn it around? Let's help this guy, and part of that is being clear about what it is we don't like, not just a general wail.

And let's positively reinforce USFHA by saying good job USFHA! Let's see more of these positive trends!
And it is indeed a happy new year.
Have a good one.

Well done USFHA
Let us all work together to keep buildinh leagues in our key hockey playing areas. Add to this the aquisition of an afforable astro turf field, and the player base will get organized and be able to hold regular practice and plenty of league development. This is what we need to move forward. So good positive move, let's keep it going.

Take it to the BOYS
His first order of business shoudl be to establish playing opportunities for boys around the country. If the sport is to grow in the US, the feminist regime (harsh, I know) at USFHA needs at ACCEPT that this is a co-ed sport and should NOT just be played by girls. If this is done, all of hockey will be better.

Even before creating opportunities Terry will do something that will be even MORE important, because it will ensure that sustainability and stability of any programs. He will create a framework, and this will be based on all of the research he has been in contact with and gathered over the years. He has a few good staff/people in USFHA who will see where he wants to go, and support him. Strength from the bottom up.

I know that he will effect the areas of concern we have all posted on this site over the years, including the inequality and biased again boys/men playing sport.

more like a mercenary club team.

quick fix plans like this will not work and short term gains could possibly have detrimental effects on the long term successes.
If Terry Walsh can set up a decent and lasting hockey infrastructure then USA will surely move forward in time. Mens and Womens club leagues, regional academies and some high standard coaching.

What we need
To hell with the results of the National team for at least 4/5 years. What we must focus on as people have mentioned is bulding a solid infrastructure. That means, getting facilities for the hockey community to use. Continuing to develop leagues that will attract players and letting boys and girls play and enjoy the sport. The social aspect is key for growth as well. Only when we have these basic things in place, will be able to support and sustain international level players, that's when our attention can focus once again on the National team. Until then who cares!

This is the best thing I've seen out of US Field hockey since my son took up the sport. I have to agree totally with Ms V concerning the need for expanded opportunities for boys at the school and college level. My son has worked hard and accomplished a good deal, but there is so much more boys and men could do for US field hockey if given just 10% of the support girls and women receive for joining "traditionally men's sports".

Congratulations to Terry Walsh, congratulations to USFHA, and I look forward to improvement of both the men's AND women's teams.

Suggestion
USA should hold something like Premier League being played in India. Lot of foreign coaches should be invited to develop interst among the youngsters. The youngster get a chance to learn from these top hokcey players as well. They can hire pakistani and indian players at much lower cost as the currency in these country is not that strong and even smaller amout in dollars will be much in rupees. These players are very skillful and play attactive hockey as well.

Great Move, but..........!
This should give both the Woman's and Men's Programs a real boost, but surely only the top elite players who are coming through and the National teams.

I think it is totally unrealistic to expect that Terry Walsh will come in, wave a majic wand and all the ills of Field Hockey in the U.S. will be cured.

On the Men's side there needs to be much more grass roots development, at the community level, like there is in Southern California, at the youth level. Until there are many more Junior Boys playing you can't expect the National Program to improve.

Great Start USFHA, but much more is needed.

I've looked at everyone's comments & it seems like this is a great move by the USFHA but I'm amazed that people think that one man can make the USA into contenders - the problems with US hockey, and to some extent US sport in general, are fairly obvious: Americans, as in the general population, will NEVER care about a sport until they are the best or at least can compete with the best in the world!! So the USA must make the most of the handfull of kids who are willing to put school, careers etc. on hold to participate in the sport - these kids must be supported as much as possible to make sure that they do not slip through the net!

What I hope Terry can do is to motivate/teach the coaches on how to get the best out of the few & perhaps encourage more to take up the sport. But we are kidding ourselves if we think one man can turn us into contenders!

framework v plan
v what are you talking about? Mrs V was spot on with what she said, US field hockey needs to develop framework. You obviously dont realise the difference between the two so here it is:

a plan is used to do a single job, generally in the short term. i.e. you would have a plan if you wanted to build a new bridge or sumting

framework is designed so that it will work in the long run, with different coaches, players etc so that if any part of it changes the rest is easily changed with it. i.e. think the framework of a building, it doesnt cover everything, just gives the builders a general idea of where they r building, and holds everything in place.

If the USA has a 'plan' it will work for maybe 2 years and then fall back in on itself once terry moves on, by developing a framework it allows the USA to develop over the long term and hopefully develop teams that are world standard

If you are looking for a comparison with English Hockey you'll be severely disappointed.
Unlike Hockey in UK,Australia,India there are no male hockey programs in the schools in the US. What fragmented leagues are developed in 3 areas, with the most prominent being in Southern California ( MooparK) where there are 4 or 5 Mens clubs with most of the US senior and junior teams coming from there. There is a Bay Area League in Northern california which has a similar number of teams and a NY league which used to have 10 teams but had a large number of foreign players and consequently ineligible for the US .
Any team from the Englsih premier league would probably better the US senior team on any given day. The current US team is probably the weakest the US has fielded in the past 20 years and I'm not sure the trend is getting any better. Its a numbers game and its hard to get numbers into Hockey in the US when we dont have astroturf pitches and club structures nationwide. The womens program is not much better but does have the benefit of hockey being played in High school ( 12 week season). Womens program has an even weaker club structure with no competetive leagues after NCAA .
We are hopeful of iincremental benefits from the hiring of Terry Walsh but are under no illusions as to the difficult task he has. I think all of us in Sth California hockey will give him as much assistance as he needs.
Come and say G'day Terry.

If he manages to attract a foreign coach of the same caliber for the national team(s), the ladies' team will be in the top 6 within 2 years. And except for Holland, Argentina and possibly Australia any team is within reach within the next few years, given the marginal differences between the world's numbers 4 to 12.

first he needs to develope hockey from school level ,a solid program which all follow throughout nation wide ! then you 'll be able to groom some talent.......as in california 4 or 5 clubs ,wont produce full time players most of them just play for fitness or for just practice ,they have nothing in their minds to compete on international level.........

Clarifying his role
Hi Guys, I am a little confused here,
I am not sure about Terrys role with USA, but other High Performance positions around the world have nothing to do with Grass Roots or School Level Hockey.
Their role is the development of the coaches and players at elite level - that is , National and Inernational level.
All the others definatley do work from Elite Programs.
I would think Terry would need to do an audit to determine the suitability of the current program (and I am assuming there is one) and from there determine where he will make the changes to be able to lift the standard of the US.
If there is no current Elite Program (which would explain alot) they he will put an Elite program together based on what he has seen from around the world and how he sees the environment of Field Hockey in the US.
This is a good appintment for the US.

We'll see what changes are next?
Does Laura Darling get to stay on as the chief of the worst hockey high performance development program in the worls (FUTURES). If Mr Walsh feels this program does not help high performance is it untouchable because of the money? I am somewhat skeptical that anyone can operate in an enviroment where the obstacles to growth are running the biggest cash cow the USFHA has. Maybe I am looking at this too cynically, I don't know. If anyone has any info on how this effects the Tina Reinprect, Laura Darlings of the world please let me know. If it has no effect then sadly the USFHA is going no where even with a great hockey mind putting the technical play togehter. The underlying structure is what needs to change. For example calling summer league regionalization does not change a thing only eliminate HS players (except the chosen few) from playing in a developmental league. Who exactly are we trying to develop, the out of shape 25-30 yr olds who have not been taught enough over the years about international hockey and they will have not impact on future olympic teams, or are we trying to let young and old players mix together so that the knowlege base can be taught to the next generation at a younger level not after college when it won't matter. What regionalization is is a bone to the college coaches to get them to support more fully the USFHA. The college coaches get to have there NCAA players for more practice and development making the college teams that runt he regional sites more powerful. The NCAA should look into this as these coaches are extending the season into an area that they should not be allowed. Because it is "Olympic development" they can have as many practices as they want. As for grassroots it will still fall on everyone to do whatever they can to help the sport grow, help is not coming from the USFHA.

Feeder System
You can not sustain an Elite program if there is no system in place below it to feed players into it. Terry has come from areas where there are deep club systems that send their top talent to these elite programs. In the US if you are male, have a passport and can hold a stick you are in the mens Elite program! There needs to be a feeder system U16, U18, U21 then the full national team. This gives the kids something to aim for, and helps prevent them becoming arrogant too early when they are not good at all. These young teams need to be fed from other systems, clubs, schools etc.

Hopefully Terry is smart enough to realize this, and also understands that any Elite program especially for men should not be the CA national team alone. Decisions like putting a field in VA Beach away from the hockey community in the NE does not help! We need a NE program that is easy to get too from, Boston to DC. That's where the players are, so somewhere in the middle probably makes the most sense and will do more to develop these areas further and create a true NATIONAL team.

Good luck Terry, hope you read these boards and take on this feedback in the spirit of making a difference for the long haul in the US.

I'm not sure what "Elite Program" is complaining about....but if the North East is such a field hockey hot bed, why haven't the players in that area gotten their collective acts together, built their own clubs and pitches and organized their own outdoor league like the good folks in Southern California have? The Los Angeles Tigers didn't even win their own league this past year, yet managed to slaughter these North East teams in the U.S. Club championships a year ago, leading me to two conclusions....1) the male players in Southern California can do a little more than just hold a stick; and 2) players in the North East should become more self reliant about developing their own facilities and leagues.

Indeed the team they beat (TriState) had their best player cynically taken out (he's only just starting to play again) and at least they were taken from the roster you see in the NEFHA league every week, unlike the Tigers one-off 'All Star' team. In fact NE players are so self-reliant they have created the highest standard competition in the whole of North America-NAPL.I understand Cali were begging to enter a team...watch and learn dude.

To who does he replace. Yes it is hard to imagine that one person could in effect change so much in USAFH, however Terry is not just one person. There are now many good people who are working it critical postitions within USAFH who have not upset the applecart just yet, and now that they will have a strong voice leading them in Terry, will be able to make these changes.

Yes, these changes will have to ultinatley effect teh entire system if they are to truley work. Ric was able to mould/manipulate the Aust system to work. Many of his idea were interesting to say the least, but for a coach to have so much power and effect so many areas and different levels fo the sport shows it can be done.

What he will need desperately from YOU, is support. If you can see some good in what he is doing, support it! Back it up, even if there are some things that you may not like or understand. This is the greatest test of loyalty you will EVER have. Put away your greviences and badges of honour. I can see this working, but negetive nancy's will ruin any good idea - get behind the game.

(P.S. v, I think your comments have been answered by others. A framework + hardwork is exactly what is needed.)

NE vs California
The Los Angeles Tigers team that crushed the field at the Club Championships was the same Club team that played together all season in the Southern California Field Hockey Association's Spring League.....they were dethroned by this past season by Mystery, the best team in the United States. Why don't the East Coast Hockey hot shots put a team together and come out for Cal Cup at the end of May for a bi-coastal showdown? I'm betting they'd go slinking home in defeat. Don't you think Shiv would have some of these East Coast guys on the team if they were any good?

Elite program was right in a way. Every guy in the US who plays hockey moderately well is considered an elite player. How many players on the Jr teams aren't really good? There are some, but they are considered elite. I don't think it was an east coast/west coast battle either, until of course you started it. Most of the good players on the east coast are foreign, with an exception of a vew jr players and a senior player. Taking all of the us hockey players from the east coast and playing them in cal cup would be embarassing for them. That is why we need to invest in pitches (which isn't as easy or affordable as you would think), and start clubs. Also, right now people on the east coast have started the only good hockey in the us (NAPL.) SoCal is alright with outdoor, and the club in Moorpark is very well set up for the US. The east coast is far better with indoor, and NAPL is what we have to show for it. Shut up about the whole east coast/west coast thing. Its not worth it to get started.
(P.S. Shiv does have some east coast guys on the team. Think about if they had started playing good hockey as young as you west coast guys. Scary)

To CA
My comments were not intended to start a civil war. They were meant to say that we need support in the NE as well to allow development in the sport and young players to grow. VA beach is too far away to have a program for most players. Your comments about how good LA Tigers are is really meaningless. We the whole USA can not produce a team that can compete at the international level, so best team in USA is meaningless. I'm happy their are teams period, we just need more to continue our progress.

framework
While conventional coaching methods focus on content (rules, skills, knowledge) - the framework(s) is what we need first so the content CAN exist.

seems to me...la tigers are a collabaration of mercenaries..so to call the boys a team is not only incorrect but unfair...and thank the team sponsers (LOL) for that.....
seems to me the team to beat in the US is Mystery...
