The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) will consider providing financial aid to state affiliates for their development programme.
However, the state affiliates will first have to prove that they have a proper development plan and that they have the right personnel to carry out the tasks.
Otherwise, MHF secretary T. Paramalingam said, they would be throwing good money away for nothing.
The new council has agreed to look at providing some funding. But it is important that the state affiliates ensure that their programmes are structured with a set target. Right now, a lot of the programmes are done in an ad hoc manner.
We at the MHF too are in the process of reorganising our set up so that we can be more effective, he said yesterday. The new officer-bearers in the MHF took over on Dec 20 and have set themselves 100 days to come out with a blueprint for the future to be submitted to the government.
Hockey is one of the eight core sports that have been identified by the government for financial help. The others are aquatics, football. bowling, squash, gymnastics, athletics and badminton.
Grassroots development is a priority under the government's plan and Paramalingam said the state affiliates must look into that as well.
The message here is that states must work at the grassroots development so that we at MHF can concentrate at the elite level. It means that we each take care of certain tasks and not duplicate the work.
The states, he said, would be asked to provide ideas when the council meet on Jan 15 to discuss the blueprint in detail.
