India must stick to the Asian style of play instead of following the European teams if it wants to dominate the game again, legendary Pakistani hockey player Akhtaar Rasool has said.
"The problem is same with both India and Pakistan. We tend to be fascinated by the way Europeans play and drift away from our own style. That's doing no good to the game in the subcontinent," Pakisan's former captain Rasool, who was here in connection with the staging of the seven-match veteran Test series between India and Pakistan, said.
India, who dominated the world for decades winning eight Olympic and one world title, are going through a lean phase and have failed to win any major championship for almost 25 years.
The Asian giants, whose last major title came way back in 1980 in the Moscow Games, are making all efforts to revive their sagging fortunes, but have failed in their endeavour so far despite appointing German Gerhard Rach as their first foreign coach.
The centre-half, who played in the 1970s and 80s, said despite losing against minnows like France in recent times, India still holds their position as one of the leading teams of the game, but they must do the basics right to win consistently.
"We have our own style, but now the players are not too keen to follow that. There is no more body-dodge, short passes and return passes. The day we again lay stress on such aspects, we will come closer to getting back our old position," said Rasool. PTI

India has been playing their own brand of pathetic hockey for many years now. Apart from Pillay & Dhillon they have not produced players who can beat top class defenders where it matters & their defending has been laughable for too long. They don't learn the basics of man marking & then passing their way out of defence.
Pakistan continue to play in the 'old fashioned' way (short passes, body feints etc).

exactly !
The current indian players play neither "asian style" nor "european style". I think when the slide came in the 80s, players with more speed and stamina were given preference. The hockey they play now is simply "hit and run". They score only on counter attacks where they don't have to confront many defenders.
How did we come to this state ? I really don't think blaming the IHF, or other bodies, coaches etc is any good. Maybe we are trying to play at a faster pace than we have to.
And what happened to the original homes of hockey, places like UP, bhopal ? When was the last time we had a player from these areas?
Former pakistani players lament about the old days too, but I still think they have preserved their style to some extent. If pakistan fixes its defence, it will be the world champ.

indian hockey
We have talent but no management. We need people at the helm who can think, are honest and are capable of planning ahead. And have the wisdom of hiring a topclass coach. Kaushik did a great job, why are we ignoring him ?
gagan, deepak, are good, probably very good at times but they are not world class. None of the youngsters can match dhanraj and dhillob { baljeet not Daljeet } god help us.

is it possible to play the asian style again? i dont think so... we mixed the both the style of european and asian styles.... so that we could not success on both...
our players mentally prepared for europian styles during coaching camp even off the field they speak out hit and run..
but they follow the asian style in the field.... their mental preparation not suits to their actual doings...
so it never get success even they follow the asian style.....
what ever it may be let them do hard work ...... as europeans.......
