The national hockey juniors will get an early start into 2005 with friendlies lined up against a Canadian club side from Jan 4 before they tour Australia later in the month.
The club team from University of British Colombia will play four matches with the national juniors, on the 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th, at the National Hockey Stadium here.
The Canadians arrived here on Dec 28.
They played one match yesterday, against this year's Malaysia Hockey League runners-up Ernst and Young (E&Y), and will play another on the 3rd with E&Y, said Malaysia Hockey Federation honorary secretary T. Paramalingam.
Both the juniors and the Canadian club had clashed before, in the recent Ramesh Chander hockey tournament in Jallandhar, India, as both teams were there on a tour.
That match ended in favour of the Canadians, 2-1.
"The friendlies can be used to gauge their playing level before they (juniors) head for their playing tour to Australia from Jan 12 to 26.
"Besides, it is also a platform for the juniors to learn, improve and coordinate their moves. Friendlies are good ways to polish their playing capability and overcome their weaknesses in certain areas," Paramalingam said.
