Tariq Kirmani : 19th PHF President
By : Syed Akber Ali Wahidi

Tariq Kirmani, Managing Director of Pakistan State Oil Company Limited (PSO) since July 2001, became 19th President Of Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) inplace of General ® Muhammad Aziz Khan on 28 December 2004. Kirmani was not present in the PHF Council meeting and he will have to take charge in forthcoming meeting.
PSO is the largest oil marketing company of the country. It also has the distinction of one of the few local companies which is included in the prestigious global list of 500 on the basis of its revenues. It was established in 30 Dec 1976 through the merger of ESSO, Premier Oil Company and Pakistan National Oil. The company is the largest oil marketing company in the country with around 70 per cent share of the oil market and, as such, forms the backbone of the country's fuel and energy needs.
PHF handed over to the head of a major business entity in the public sector with the purpose that its corporate support could lift the game from its bootstraps and return it to its former glory. Tariq Kirmani and PSO will face tough challenge to fulfill these expectations - and do something what PIA achieved from 1978 to 1984, in transforming Pakistan into a world beater.
Kirmani, having a rich experience spanning over 32 years in the petroleum sector. He had joined PSO as Deputy Managing Director (Marketing) in April 1999. He is also Member Board Of Management in PSO. He has the exposure of working abroad in senior management positions especially in the United States, the United Arab Emirates and Australia. Soon after completing his Master's in Business Administration, Kirmani embarked upon a rewarding career. His first association, which spanned over almost three decades from August 1969 to December 1998 with that oil major where he held senior management positions in Marketing, Operations and Financing in Pakistan and overseas. In 1991, Kirmani became the first Pakistani to be elected as a Company Director of that multinational oil company here he served for 30 years.
Lahore-based PHF is as old as that of the country itself. Immediately after its inception, the ruling body of hockey in Pakistan organized the First National Championship in March 1948 at Lahore. The chief guest of the final was first President of PHF, Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan. The first successful PHF President was Gen. Muhammad Musa when Pakistan won the Rome Olympics 1960, followed by Nur Khan and Gen.K.M.Azhar when Pakistan was able to win Mexico Olympics 1968 and World Cup 1971 respectively.

PHF turned to superlatives when Nur Khan regained presidency and he was lucky to have a company of fantastic hockey giant in Atif. The duo of Air Marshal M. Nur Khan as President and Brig. M.H.Atif as Secretary PHF gave new directions not only to the Hockey of Pakistan but also to the PHF. That era (1978-84) in the history of PHF was golden as Pakistan Hockey Team clinched all the titles of the world events.

Aziz Khan became 18th PHF President on 5 July 2000 when PHF Council at Rawalpindi, unanimously elected him. Aziz Khan NI(M) S.Bt , former Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and former IV Corps commander in the strategically vital border city of Lahore, was a great lover of sports and he did his best to change fortune of Pakistan Hockey.

He remained at the helm for four and half years, taking over before the 27th Olympic Games 2004 and lasting up to 26th Champions Trophy 2004. Before leaving office, he called it one of his regrets that Pakistan could not regain gold in any of the seven major events in which it took part during his tenure. The best
of his tenure were a trio of bronzes in successive Champions Trophies (Cologne 2002, Amstelveen 2003, Lahore 2004). Pakistan was medal less during Olympics at Sydney 2000 (4th), Athens 2004 (5th) and World Cup at Kuala Lumpur 2002 (5th) and Rotterdam CT 2001 (4th). He was disappointed that Pakistan also failed to grab gold in Manchester Commonwealth Games (3rd), Busan Asian Games (4th) in 2002, and KL Asia Cup (2nd) and Hyderabad Afro Asian Games (2nd) in 2003.

Pakistan managed to win only 6-Nation invitational Tournament at KL 2002, 12th Azlan Shah Cup at Ipoh 2003 and 3-Nation Tournament at Alcala la Real 2004 under him. Pakistan won 94 of the 164 matches played under his presidency with goal counts of 505-340. Twenty-eight matches were ended in draw while Pakistan tasted 42 defeats.
