The national hockey team have declined an invitation from the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) to play in the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Gold Cup tournament in February next year.

National coach Wallace Tan said yesterday that they do not want to take part in a club tournament.

“I do not mind if there are national teams involved. It will better for us to seek some Test matches with national teams during the period.

“I'm sure the tournament will be competitive but nevertheless it is a club-based meet and we will be the only national side in the meet,” he said.

The tournament is expected to feature top clubs in India along with Pakistan's top club, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

The national hockey team do not have any matches arranged for the month of February but Wallace said he was not perturbed about it.

“It is all right if we do not have any matches to play at that time. We need time for our training sessions and for intensive fitness work. At the same time, we will also be working on the tactical aspects,” he said.
