The Bombay Hockey Association (BHA) has decided to provide insurance cover to players and umpires who are to feature in the matches organised by it.
The BHA has taken an insurance cover worth Rs 25,000 against full or partial disability for each of its players, umpires and staff members and the policy is being administered by the Oriental Insurance Company, it was announced at a press conference today.
A total of 1,500 persons will be covered under the policy, BHA Secretary, Commander Kehar Singh (retired) said.
Surprisingly the approval of the Managing Committee of BHA had not been secured over the decision, a couple of committee members claimed.
"It is a unilateral decison and will be questioned at the next managing committee meeting," a member said.
The annual premium for the policy works out to between Rs 60,000 and 70,000, according to an official with the Oriental Insurance, who was present at the media briefing.
The insurance company had covered the Rs one crore award announced by the Indian hockey team's sponsors as an incentive to win the gold in the last Olympic Games at Athens, it was revealed during the conference.
