The Indian hockey team plunged to a new low with minnows France handing it a 3-1 drubbing in the first of the two Test matches here today.

France, playing a Test match outside Europe for the first time, taught the home team a lesson or two in the game before a couple of thousands of Indian supporters at the Shivaji Stadium with some aggressive play.

The visitors toyed with the Indian defence to slam home all the three goals in the first half itself and although India, who played like novices, reduced the margin at the stroke of the half-time, they failed to stop France from romping home victorious.

France, who have been on a roll since arriving in India two weeks back, made their intentions clear by scoring as early as in the ninth minute through Nicholas Gaillard (rpt Nicholas Gaillard).

The visitors made the scoreline 2-0 in their favour when Moreau Antoine scored a stunning goal in the 26th minute.

Antoine, getting the ball in the Indian 25-yard, dribbled past three defenders to enter into the circle before unleashing a powerful shot from the top left that beat goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan completely.

Jeanjean Sebastien scored off the rebound with just a minute to go for the break to put the side in a commanding position.

India struck back seconds later when Sandeep Singh converted the side's first penalty corner.

Even though the performance of the French dipped in the second half, the Indians failed to take advantage and add anything more to the tally. The frustration to break the stubborn French defence in the second half got reflected in the acts of the Indian players as two of them -- captain Dilip Tirkey and Sandeep Singh -- were temporarily suspended for foul play.

"It was disgusting. Probably we paid the price for being over-confident," India's interim coach Jagbir Singh said after the match.

"Most of the players have been playing continuously for the last 6-7 months and they may be tired. But that's certainly not an excuse," said Singh, who is in charge of the team in the absence of chief coach German Gerhard Rach.

But for France, it was probably their biggest win ever.

"We could not have asked for anything more. A draw against such a team in itself would have been an achievement. But I am happy with the show of my players," France coach Reynard Bertrand said.

"This was a very good exposure and the win would definitely help the players." The match saw Deepak Thakur and Bimal Lakra returning from wilderness, but even their presence could not change the fortunes of the side that has been struggling to perform at the highest level.

The 18-member Indian squad had 12 players who played in the recent Champions Trophy where the side finished outside the medal bracket.

France victory
Bravo les gars ! Sorry, well done, guys ! At last a French team makes us proud of our hockey ... I must admit that the federation's policy was the good one : focusing on young players so as France can have a good team in the future ... Perhaps, at last, it's going to work ! Once again, congratulations to the players and coaches and ... good luck for today's test !

Who's more imcompetent
It's too close to call, but both national bodies have demonstrated that they are the leading incompetent managment teams in the world unable to produce anything with so much talent to tap. Unfortunately Tsunami did not get either...

fantastic job!!
this is pathetic. to lose to a side like france, it would be like losing to scotland in cricket. this reitrates the demand that we need a better coach (not one who was in prison-rach), a better selection policy and a better attitude.

Well done France
Excellent Job !

India was missing some players. With a U-21 team will this you might expect France to have a shot at a podium finish. Lucky for India and other Asian countries like Malaysia, European competition is so tough that the deserving do not qualify while the incompetent Asian administrators can send teams with big hype generated with help from the media idiots.

This match shows India has no player bench strength or competent administrators. The rebuild starts with the latter.

Congratulations France
I have not really followed France field Hockey, however am not surprised they have shown their improvement in recent games against India. Indian fans may be upset and some are blaming their Hockey Boards or coaches. One must also look at the compettitive level of Hockey being played in the Europen Hockey arena.

Hockey needs to be made into a professional sport in Asia and there should be an asian league where hockey clubs from the leading Asian countries participate. This would generate not only more competitition and skillfull players ,it will also contribute towrads more public interest and more sponsorhip of this game to which Asia has given so much.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

great job done by the french team they have also proved that the team selected by gill and co is useless and that gills aim is to kill indian hockey

that also the hockey coach rach and jasbir are mutts and are not fit to do their jobs

imagine an indian airlines team could beat france and the indian team lost to france what does this say about the federation

the ex hockey players should meet the sports minister and get the officials of the ihf sacked other wise there inst any hope for indian hockey

the club teams are much better then the present XI playing hockey for indian

Not a surprise
The good results of the French Team in India, and their impressive win in the Test Series (win 3-1 and draw 3-3 after been down 0-3!) are only a surprise to the Indian media and fans: the French have a young team that played well at the 2001 Junior World Cup, they were very impressive at the 2003 Indoor World Cup (3rd) and are not far behind the top European hockey nations.

Frédéric Soyez is not exactly unknown either: he was the top scorer and was named Player of the Tournament at this Indoor World Cup. His show in the Bronze Medal game when he scored 6 of the 8 French goals was spectacular!

The French Team currently suffers from the density of European hockey. They were just one rank behind the last team invited at the Olympic Qualifier in Madrid (even though they finished above two of the invitees – Belgium and Poland – at the European Championships just before…). When they finally crack the invitation list for major tournaments, they could quickly climb in the World Rankings. Most teams in the 10-18 bracket are within their reach.

Hey FIH
Here is a suggestion: the FIH should make more berths available in international tournaments. so that teams like France can compete.

I agree, England are probably in the top 4 weakest European teams currently, and I don't see any reasons with Jason Lee and his selections improving on this position.

France would most certainly beat England with their current team.

Indian minnows
I just read an article here saying that France are minnows. In my opinion the only minnows here is India. I'm full of respect to Indian hockey but let's face the truth - you can't live in the past all the time and India did not win any major tournament since Moscow Olympics I think. And their game is getting worse and worse. So India - you are not a hockey empire any more.
