Thank you for you insight. Toronto went 4-0 with two one-goal wins, and they didn't play Philly. It would be great if you had something intelligent to say instead of this partisan drivel. Hopefully Toronto will have a full team next time, and not need GOA uniforms...

Hey 4-0 is 4-0 whether they were one goal wins or not, and as you said they didn't have their full team Ed Fernandes the manager had to play just so they could have 6 on the floor. This is a good league and the Toronto team will have a tough time and they know that, especially if they don't get a full team to play. They won't have Kenny for one of the weekends from what I heard. I think they can wear whatever uniform they want.

A lot of teams have come into this league 4-0. But does Toronto have the personal to make it throught 3 more weekends?
Some other teams were short handed in Philly but hopefully they will be back to full strength before the next weekend.
We can only wait and see.

They played well, and deserve the result. It is a challenge to the other cities to raise their game. Boston and NY were disapppointing and both were missing key players. Hopefully all will be at full strenght for the next round to increase the level of play. This league is great and will continue to get stronger as long the right people remain behind it.

A team may not wear the uniform of a particular club. They must wear a uniform that does not promote a particular team from the area as the initial idea was the sides involved are the best players from a particular area.

The Toronto guys played great. As 'Also there' points out, Toronto used Ed as a forward... so obviously some goals that could have been scored weren't (although he did pretty well!). The Toronto players don't think this weak competition. But posts which demean the other teams and the league get really annoying when they show such childish ignorance. And the league is about the cities, not one club in a city. Black is Boston's color, so at some point Toronto will have to get uniforms that aren't black, and have Toronto written on them.
Next weekend will be interesting, some of the strong players from Philly won't be in Toronto, and some new players will be there instead. The teams that can get a consistant & strong lineup will be the ones winning in the end.

First Weekend
It was so good to see the increase in skill level for each team involved. From a player who has seen the league at its inception (3 years ago ) to know, its awesome to see where it has gone. Tee Goh and others have done such a good job behind the scene's to make this league competitive and fun. Probably the smartest thing was not including the USFHA in any part of the league whatsoever. "USFHA What a Joke" will agree with me in saying that they are useless and do nothing but hurt the game. By not having them involved and charging people a ton of money to play, the league has gone up extremely fast. Just looking at the DC team and what they had done in the off season. Recruiting good players who are dedicated. I could see their player/coach scouting one of our games and coming up with good strategies. Strangely enough I was really excited about this because it meant that people really cared and wanted to win badly. The teams from Philadelphia looked much improved as well. With people flying to the games as far away as San Diego, California it tells you something about the commitment.
Well done orgainizers and keep it going!

Some observations from Week 1 NAPL - Men
(Firstly apologies to the ladies - no observations except that there seemed to be a lot of competitive hockey and some nail-biting finishes).
Boston - missing some important people, held scoreless for the first time, pointless for the weekend, (this has only happened to one other team before). Things did get better as the weekend progressed and they might have beaten Montreal at the end, should not be taken lightly on other weekends.
NY - also understrength, will be a force to be reckoned with when when all their players are available.
Montreal - missing some players too but picked up 4 points and pushed Toronto. Only need 1 more point to reach last seasons total.
Philly - 2 wins out of 3, very tight defense. It will be interesting to see them play Toronto.
DC - probably the most improved team from last season. Almost as many wins already (3) as they had last season (4). Will need to find a way to stop Toronto's corners.
Toronto - last but not least, a welcome addition to the league. However, they will probably find it a little more difficult on other weekends even if they deepen their ranks.
The league is looking good, lots of competitive hockey, no easy wins.

Playing against toronto was very fun, yes it was competitive also. We were down by one goal towards the end, but both teams were still having a blast playing on the field together. I think guys like kenny bring positive influence to the game, to this league. Do you have anything to back your statement or not?

I'm not surprised that USFHA isn't involved and glad that they aren't..never has a national governing body been so inept for so long...we should petition the USOC to deregister them !
Don't let the boys from nth of the Border run away with it and check their shoes for blades on the bottom before they step on the field.

improvements in 2005
Thanks to everyone who contributed positive comments and feedback on the Philly games. Reading thru all the comments, I am much ecouraged by the desire expressed by many to move forward in a positive way. Indeed, this league has come very far from 2 years ago, because of many people who have pitched in to mold the NAPL into something we can all be proud of. The ownership that everyone involved, players, coaches, and organizers, has taken to ensure the success of the league is what has made it successful.
In Philly, we all saw some very creative, and good hockey. In general, the overall level of skill has improved. We also saw the dominance of past winners being challenged as a result of this. This is what a competitive league is about.
Certainly, the entry of a team from Toronto, is very exciting! In January, the NAPL will meet in Centennial College. Teams that were missing players in Philly will undoubtedly be more prepared to upset Toronto on their home turf.
The organizing committee will also begin to look how we can develop and promote the league even further.

what a great job you are doing!!!! A quick suggestion in regards to possible sponsors. Is there anyway we can get on board witha hotel cahin and all teams must stay there and possibly a rental car agency and again all teams must rent from there. My suggestion would be the raddisson hotel as we have been staying there with many of the New York events and we even have one here in Canada.

Institutionalize success
As everyone knows Tee wears many hats. He's also got a family. While it's often said, "If you want something done ask a busy person," it's important for everyone to volunteer to do what they can to help out at tourneys and help their own clubs. This is not just to relieve the burden on the organizers, (who otherwise will receive ultimatums from spouses to desist), but to gain experience so that clubs avoid the college club problem--club does well, then organizer graduates/moves to a different college and club fades fast. So ask your club organizer each week, "anything I can do for you?"
While I'm critical of USFHA policies, I think we want to avoid building walls. NAPL is appropriately an all club event. There may be other events--such as the proposed regional training centers--where USFHA will need help from clubs and clubs may also benefit from playing against the elite centre sides. Looking down the road, some group--perhaps a club consortium foundation--will probably need to work with USFHA to start a program for fields acquisition if the US club system is going to move beyond either seasonal clubs or indoor league clubs.
Clubs should also make sure that they tell their local papers about NAPL events that they are participating in, and send their paper the evening of each day a writeup on what happened. Yes, I realize papers don't print it--but gradually they may. Find out who covers fh in the winter, get their phone, e mail, lobby them. But the press release--the prewritten, predigested story is key.
So, Toronto, make sure your local papers--not just the Toronto Star but the small papers for areas like Scarborough and whatever areas local clubs play are aware of this and get them copy as it happens. The press release should tell the story, mention any "hooks" or things that the public might latch on to--such as a player being on the national squad--have a couple of quotes, and have contact phone numbers, a snail mail address as well as an e mail address for the sender.
For anyone heading to Toronto, there's tons to do there for the non-player spouse, children, etc--at Canadian prices can make for a good family weekend. Ontario Tourism has tons of cheap lodgings listed.
For those headed from the south (US)by car, are we better off traveling via Buffalo/Niagara/Lewiston/Hamilton/Toronto or Syracuse/Kingston/Belleville/Toronto in terms of travel time?
See you there, and have a great time!
A Happy New Year to all!

Uniforms of the Toronto team
It is mentioned that the Toronto team is wearing the uniforms of GOA Reds but the rules say that a team cannnot use the uniforms of a club team. Those of us in Toronto know this is ok because GOA Reds are a defunct club in Toronto for a couple of years and just a few guys who get together to play in tournaments and then have to bring in people from various other clubs and cities to make up a team.
GOA Reds can't even produce a team for the local Toronto indoor league where you have to use "club members" and they certainly haven't done so for the outdoor league for a couple of years at least.

DC Women Need A Restructuring
First of all, kudos to all, including Tee for making this league a success. Now the same attention needs to be turned to the DC Women's Team. I don't intend to "bash" but rather make some very critical observations.
First, the DC women's team is a Mavericks FHC team. It is not truly a DC area team because many women have chosen not to play due to the politics employed by the Mavs GM. There truly was NO tryout this year and a top-level player was "excluded" from the team until she went to Tee. There are many players who have left the program because of various reasons, however, IMHO, there appears to be a conflict on interest between the Mavs GM and various other members of the club.
I'll leave my comments at that. I know they are harsh but they are very accurate. I have seen a lot of friendships and relationships disolve because of this. Hopefully, that is enough of a reason to do something.

Why don't you try out for Toronto, they were looking for players as the travel commitment is tough for some of their players. Don't know anything about the DC situation but it looks like the GM did not picka strong squad, but to be fair it is their decision as GM to pick who they see fit. Hopefully this will not take away from the positive spirit of the league.

Always got to put down the best team.
Yes Boston will struggle this year but they are not a one man team all player contribute. Yes we have the best player but he is only one person. Problem was teams tried to shut him down last year and some teams were successfully but there was another 5 players on the field who stepped up.
The first weekend Boston was down 3 starters from last year. This weekend they will be down 3 starters again.
Sounds like you are a little envious of Boston.
First season DC could not beat NY to win the title
Second season NY could not beat DC to win the title
But you know what Boston had to win the last weekend in DC and we did. Goes to show we had the personnel on a regular basis to win the league both years.
Lets see if the other teams have what it takes to win the league!!!!!! I know DC and NY didnt the last 2 year.
Will this be Phillys year????

Summary
I did not see DC men play, but addition of Andrew G to the team paid dividends in week one. 3 and 1 record with a one goal loss to Toronto. Andrew's potential absence in To might be felt, but I'm sure DC will have replacements and continue its strong showing from week one.
Absence of Scotty for Boston had obvious effects on results of Boston games - 4 losses. They are not a one-man team, but every team's results suffer when star his absent and when you have a short bench and heavy drinkers. I assume we'll see Scotty and better results in To even if there are other absentees. Although, I see Boston going 4-0 on Jan 22-23 weekend when they are back home to tighten any race.
To should certainly be stronger this upcoming weekend. Home field does have a certain advantage since you pretty much can get most of your players that do not have the time or the will to travel to the other cities. 4 and 0 in week one with two one goal victories against DC and Montreal. I can see them going 3-0 in To but certainly having some tough games getting there.
Mtl should have more bodies to make the trip and play in the cold North. Record of 1 win , 1 loss and 1 tie in Philly. Led in every game in the first weekend, but relinquished leads to To (loss) and to NY (tie). Positive attitude foreseen for Toronto trip since all speeding tickets will be in Canadian dollars for them. Tight games expected all around.
Philly - 2-1 at home and had several players who joigned them from the national team tryouts. Hopefully some of those players continue to make the trips and make them a continuing force toughout the weekends. As it is so often mentioned above, it is difficult to maintain same roster and strength every weekend.
NY also missed certain international flavours to their squad in Philly compared to their closing team from 03-04. Fought back from a 3-1 deficit to rally and tie Montreal in week 1, but fell short in other 3 games. They will regroup quickly.
All the best for a great league and some tight matches. All the best for the women games as well.

What end are you talking out of? Aren't there are non-mavs players on the roster, and if Tee is the contact for all things Maverick's, isn't he the GM? While it wasn't publicised on PFH like the NYC trials, everyone knows who to call for information. Is it a case of stereotypical US apathy until one realizes that something could be fun and then, because it is too late, points the finger at someone else to cover their own arse, thus feeling better about the situation? Maybe you should have turned up to a practise for a tryout
From what I recall of last year's postings, the DC team was doubled up on (or blasted) almost every match until the last weekend. Doesn't seem to be the case per the above info. What, exactly, are you observing?

Please refrain from making negative, or accusatory comments targetting specific individuals. This is not what NAPL stands for. There are other forums for that.
The current GM for Mavericks is a great asset to the club and local hockey. We are also human and we should all try to do our best and learn from one's mistakes, but not hesitate to lead. Club hockey in this country is sorely in need of leaders and this person has stepped up to the plate.
Having said that, I invite you to take a pro-active role in our activities, including the formation of next year's DC team. Be a positive force for change.

Just to clarify, there are ONLY 4 Mavericks on the roster of 18 for the DC Women, not to mention the list of those who would be considered for Wild Cards- none of which are Mavericks.
There were 3 scheduled tryouts that were announced several weeks in advance and exceptions were made for those who could not attend and made contact through Tee, myself or one of the other selectors. All of these tyrouts were Open.
There were several selectors for the DC Women's Squad. Including Tee and myself, there were at least 3 other Male Coordinators involved and 2 other women, both have played and currently play for the Metros and please note that NEITHER of these women are Mavericks.
You are obviously misinformed at some point about our selections process and I would love to discuss it with you. Please email me directly at: KatyNor@aol.com if you wish to discuss this topic further.

Boston.
Scott is probably the best player in the league. Not having him alone isn't why we struggled (to say the least). We weren't just down Scott, we were down our top 3 goal scorers from last year. Scott, who was coaching; Craig, who couldn't play this year; and Rutger, who went to Philly because of the commuete. We could not field the same team as in the last weekend from last year (that is when i think we were the strongest.) This weekend we'll have Scott, which will help our short corners out a lot, and a little field play as well. We are going to be missing Caddy, but are picking up Pat Harris, who will be a big impact player. I think we aren't going to field our strongest team until possibly the DC weekend, but this will be one of our strongest. One big thing we have against us is not playing together. Lets go Boston. Lets gain some pride.

If you didn't see DC play, how can you say that Andrew was that effective? He did play well, but I believe their success was the fact that they've been playing together for a while, and practicing together. Andrew helped, but I don't think he was any more valuable than Hindy or the German guy (sorry don't rememebr the name).

Reply to Hmmm
I did not see Andrew play in Philly, but I have played with and against Andrew and from what I was told from the goalies that were beat by him in Philly, he had not loss his touch around the net. You can have great hockey skills and team play but the skill of burying your shot in the net is what lights up the scoreboard and makes the difference in tight matches, by not making them tight. I was therefore basing my comments from what I was told by others during that weekend. I presume that Andrew's play might have been commented on more since he was an addition to the league in 04-05. And that is definitely a positive aspect that all look for in this league. I'll take Andrew on our team any day and did not feel the need to mention Christophe who played in the previous year of the league since the comment was made to show the potential for improvement of the team in 04-05. I'll also take Christophe on my team as well, for what it matters.
Yes DC is playing well as a team. Maybe my comment would have been better put by saying DC is looking strong and will be even stronger with Andrew in the line-up. Chris Maack (I apologize if this is the wrong spelling of the German guy that you refer to) is definitely a great indoor player in this DC team and also fully deserves recognition as a positive force, but those who followed the teams last year knew he was already part of the DC squad. I just saw Andrew as a valuable offensive addition and that his absence might be felt on the scoreboard in games in Toronto.
There you go Hmmm. I hope this explains my summary of week one and if DC pumped them in all weekend in Toronto without Andrew, my comments will be wrong.
PS Id also like to see Observer give a try at just shadowing Kenny on the field 1-without a stick 2-without needing to remove the ball from him, 3-without needing to tackle him 4-and finally without needing to avoid a foul and then comment on his play and how you figure you would do against him with a stick, when you need to remove the ball from him or tackle him and must not foul.
