Ten Ulster players have been named in a 23-strong Irish women's hockey squad for next month's training camp in Barcelona.

Among them are uncapped hopefuls like Randalstown's Clare Parkhill, Armagh's Hannah Bowe and Pegasus' Kirsty McCollum.

Irish captain Lynsey McVicker, along with Hermes star Jenny Burke and her clubmate Linda Caulfield, have been excused the trip.

Naturally they will be among the first names on the list when the squad for the European Nations' Cup is announced next year.

"I will be using the Barcelona trip to see what some of the younger players are capable of," said national coach Riet Kuper today.

Ireland will be playing at least one warm-up game against Olympic silver medalists Holland during the ten-day camp.

Further down the line, at least one match against England has been arranged with the prospect of more to come.

That's because other competing nations will be anxious to suss out the facilities at UCD and general infrastructure in Dublin before the Euro showpiece scheduled for Belfield.

Ireland squad for Barcelona: Suzanne Beaney (Belfast Harlequins), Hannah Bowe (Armagh), Elaine Bromell (Catholic Institute), Fiona Connery (Hermes), Eimear Cregan (UL), Kristin Farrell (Waterford), Mary Goode (Pembroke Wanderers), Louisa Healy (Loreto), Jill Hodgins (Hermes), Katharine Maybin (Pegasus), Nicky McCaughern (Ballymoney), Jenny McDonough (Belfast Harlequins), Kirsty McCollum (Pegasus), Bridget McKeever (Ballymoney), Cathy McKean (Loreto), Ciara Murphy (Old Alex), Ciara O'Brien (Railway Union), Linda O'Neill (Loreto), Clare Parkhill (Randalstown), Angela Platt (Ballymoney), Nicky Symmons (Loreto), Emma Stewart (Armagh), Orla Ryan (Loreto).

what!!!!!!!
just looking at this squad and what the hell is going on how can you not pick EMER HARTE she was irelands only quality player in the u21 european cup squad that looked decidedly average if not plain rubbish!!

she is currently starting in the table topping CHELMSFORD team in england, a league which is far stronger than anything in ireland and will be going to the european club championships as one of chelmsfords leading defenders.

Copp on ireland if you are ever going to have a chance of competing at international level you have to start picking some good players!!!

If you are really a friend/fan of Emer Harte then do her a favour and stop making outrageous statements on her behalf. Perhaps Chelmsford have a great conditioning programme because the Emer Harte on view in Dublin at the 21s was not in any kind of physical condition to play serious hockey.

i totally agree with santa.emer is a good player but i think she is a bit off the mark for representing our country.the competition is too strong with fantastic players e.g ciara o'brien, elaine brommel and fiona connery fulfilling ireland's backline

well 2 b honest if emer doesn't have the capabilities then how come there are a number of even younger players who definitely don't have the physical condtioning to play against world clas oppostion. i totally agree if ireland want to compete they need to start picking their squad on those that have the eperience and potential to mix it with the best in the world
