Spirit Eagles sent a group of 11 U18 girls to Ontario, Canada December 4, 2004 to compete in an International Indoor U18 Field Hockey Tournament - The Scarborough Junior Indoor Field Hockey Cup. After 2 shut outs by Kent Place's goalkeeper, Christine Ring, Spirit Eagles scored 24 goals, and had only 5 goals scored against. The Spirit Eagles proudly walked away with a gold medal. The MVP of the U18 girls tournament was Chantae Miller from East Amherst, NY, who is a member of the Spirit Eagles Group. The girls have become the first US team in 20 years to win a gold medal in Canada.
Canada is known for its indoor hockey. They are thought of as one of the strongest indoor teams in North and South America. In 2003, the Canadian National Team
finished in second in the Indoor World Cup. Spirit Eagles was led by Head
Coach and SEG Director Bobby Issar, who has over 23 years of playing and coaching
experience at the national level.

Small correction
Canada is indeed known for its indoor hockey and they are leaders in the Americas.

But they didn't finish 2nd at the inaugural Indoor World Cup in 2003: they finished 6th, which is already a great achievement as they were the first non-European team (the other non-European teams were at the bottom of the standings: 10th South Africa, 11th USA and 12th New Zealand).

Congratulations to the Spirit Eagles girls for this win!

History?
If your article is claiming to be the first US Indoor team to win gold in Canada, the I guess you are correct in stating they made history. However, as the article reads, it is incorrect: "The girls have become the first US team in 20 years to win a gold medal in Canada." For the record, the US U18 women won gold at the Montreal Cup in 2000 and the U19 team repeated this in 2001.

Big deal.
Who cares. Lets see how this team does at indoor nationals. If they win in the US then you can crow about it. This for profit FH club needs the publicity, they certainly have not won much on the domestic circuit. How many other quality US teams have even played in a Canadian tournament.

US invades Canada
I direct your attention to the NAPL pages on this web site. NAPL (North American Premier League) is a high-level indoor league composed of now six teams: Boston, DC, New York, Philadelphia, Montreal, and Toronto. The first weekend of games was held this weekend in Philly. The ONLY international indoor league in the world. Many national players - both Canadian and American - are in this league and many of the US national players are recruited from this league.

Giving Back

It's amazing how much money kids are dumping into hockey. It's also a crime that adults are making such a big profit off of quote, "elite" teams. Give me a break. At the festival, many of these "elite" teams got worked by teams comprised of average joes.

It's critical that the hockey community applauds the efforts of adults who continue to give back to the sport. Many high school age players in the US are given a false sense of accomplishment by throwing a title around like "elite" player. I believe the best way to give back is to open a kids eyes to the entire "world" of hockey, and how much work goes in to being a true gold medalist!

International Indoor League
I believe that Cali's statement is correct as the NAPL has teams from the USA and Canada. While many European countries obviously have strong indoor leagues, all the teams in each league are from only one country. If someone knows of an indoor league with teams from more than one country, let us know the details.

On another aspect of the international flavor of the league, last year's rosters on the men's side contained players from over twenty different countries. Many are studying in the US or Canada. Others have come here to work or have made North America their home. This influx has played a key role in strengthening the league, but is also helping create a competitive venue for younger American and Canadian citizens to develop their abilities.

Congratulations
Sorry that I forgot to say in my last post, "congratulations" to Bobby Issar and the Spirit Eagles girls. I can only commend them for travelling to Toronto to play against good competition and being successful. Finding new ways to challenge yourself and learn is vital in our sport.
