The first game of the 4 nations tournament started with Argentina playing Canada. It was a beautiful but very hot cloudless day. The game started tentatively with both teams feeling each other out. A general sense of nervousness prevailed. Gradually Argentinas ball possession skills prevailed with them dictating the pace of play. Helping them to earn their first PC at the fifth minute of the game. Our defence team was lead by Amanda in net, Jammie on the post, Jessica on the right and Mary running out. The Argies performed a straight shot very skillfully blocked by the goalkeepers stick. A second PC was awarded to Argentina in the 6th minute, with them attempting a direct shotwith the pads cleared by Jammie after a scramble. In the 10th minute, after a clear off a high ball from a US penalty corner the US left wing had a straight shot on net giving Argentina their first and only goal of the first half. Argentina had another 3 penalty corner at the 16th, 27th and !
30th minute all brilliantly defended by our penalty corner defence unit. Canada built on an effective attack finishing with a fantastic opportunity from left winger, Katie Baker. In the second half Argentina became more assertive with unified movement that significantly increased the pace of the game with crisp ball movement and possession play. Argentina had four penalty corners in the second half at the 42nd, 44th, 54th and 61st minute. The only goal scored was at the 61st minute which was a straight shot with a tip at the left post. Argentina also had two free play goals, one at the 50th minute and the other at the 58th minute. The game finished 4-0 for Argentina.
Thoughts from the team:
We contained the Argies really well in the first half but their endurance and speed proved to be more effective to their game over ours.
After that game we realized we can compete against the best in the world and it really motivated us to step up our game and increase our intensity in training and future competitions.

Favourable to our northern temperaments, the overcast skies set the stage for a brilliant performance from our Canadian team.
The US team, determined to overcome the loss the previous day to Chile, came out flying. The Canadians initially appeared unready for this onslaught. At the 19th minute, a questionable call was made and Amanda Stone came out big with a save in the top right corner. Unfortunately, at the 20th minute the pace of the US attack did not slow down and the US earned another penalty corner, which they capitalized on. The US had seven penalty corners in the first half and Canada didnt have any. As the clock runs down, Canada stepped it up and the midfield became more involved in the attack particularly a play developed by the back field. A pass made by center midfielder, Katie Rushton, and a good lead by right winger, Thea Culley, lead to a strong shot and forced the US goal keeper to make a good save.
In the second half of the game started with the same lineup that finished the first half - Robyn, Tyla, Katie Baker, Amanda, Jessie, Nikki, Ali, Megan, Katie Rushton, Thea and Cailie. In the second half only two corners were earned by the US team and Canada earned their first three penalty corners of the tournament all very well executed by Jessie Denys. The three penalty corners executed were two drag flicks and a straight shot at the 66th minute, which resulted in an equalizer goal brought the score up to 1-1.
Unfortunately the escalading, unchecked, uncontrolled and aggressive play by the Americans lead to an injury to right defender, Ali Lee. Both Dr. Bruce and Terri-Lynns expertise played a vital role in a quick recovery and will enable her to continue playing in the tournament.
Canada continued to pour on the pressure but unfortunately ran out of time with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.
Team thoughts:
The game was encouraging in the sense that we learned from previous matches and were able to adapt to the demands of the game.
The intensity level rose as the game progressed. A feeling of controlled urgency increased the efforts put forward by every member of the team!
Today was a big step for us. We showed ourselves what we can do when we maintain possession of the ball. We created some good chances in the circle, and we were able to capitalize on one of them. I look forward to see what we are able to do in our final three matches!
Reporting from Santiago de Chile Robyn, Ali, Dr. Bruce & Veronica

Canada Not Proud???
Well... we look on the FHC site and there is absolutely NO information on the tournament or the results... so, perhaps FHC should consider making sure that interested people are informed or perhaps there is nothing good to report and FHC is tucking it's sorry tail between it's sorry legs and running for the hills

Give your head a shake. ... Whiner!... They have had info on this tournament for a week!
FHC has all of the tournament info on their site. If you are so inclined, go to:
http://www.hockeycespedchile.cl/ and bring along your Spanish Dictionary.
Oh... by the way... they are doing much better than you would have given them
credit for.... For such a YOUNG and INEXPERIENCED Team, they have performed
up to and exceeded expectations...
Good Work and Goodluck.. Hope to see you in the Finals against ARG.
Cheers :)

Experience of a lifetime
We were thrilled to see the girls beat Chile...way to go team!! Dying to get more coverage of the matches and feel frustrated that everything is coming back so slowly. This team has a lot of heart and would love to see them in the finals and prove everyone wrong!!!

Awesome
Congrats girls on beating Chile, it seems that the Canadian team can get in the final in this tournament. Look what they are doing now, just wait till Emma, Hil and Robyn Evans can play, they will be dynamite. This team is growing and I think they will do better then we expect this year.
Great work so far girls, keep it up!!

Tiffany
Read the game reports...she started games 3, 4 and 5. In the ice hockey world, they don't talk about the injuries as it can give other teams a psychological advantage. Tiffany is on a development card and the powers that be deem her just that...a player in development willing to commit to the program and do what it takes to become a better player at the international level. I can only summize that you are a bitter individual who was overlooked in the selection process, and you play forward...get over it, and work on your own development...ya never know who's watching. On a positive note, although the final results on paper weren't as successful as desired/anticipated, I think the team developed as just that, a team, and that is the whole purpose of this exercise.

snorts
thanks for that stunning comment can fan... however, while FHC did have the info about the tournament being played on their stupid little website, there was no effort to update the results in a timely manner which was what i was talking about...
and i did go the the spanish website, it would appear that some of us are actually educated and can speak several languages... unlike others it would appear.... however, can fan, perhaps you require lessons in the english language and Comprehension
and perhaps since you are busy defending FHC practices you can explain to all of us why Canada sends a team of inexperienced players to a tournament when in the current situation with funding they should be sending a power house team to prove that Canada has a place on the world stage....
and i noticed that the girls didn't make the final... so another fizzle for FHC

Re : Onyx
You seem to be the most negative of Canadian Hockey.....
The girls were mostly self funded. Did very well. Were well managed and coached.
Since, I know some of the kids in the tournament, I would characterize them as having strong ethics and for their ages, great players. This team is the "future" of women's hockey along with those still recovering from injury. as I said before they have exceeded expectations.
Have you got a problem with that ? Obviously your education and strong language skills have clouded your ability to be pragmatic. Find someone who went or coached the team and interview them.
Go away...whiner....Adios Amigo!

Here we go
"We contained the Argies really well in the first half but their endurance and speed proved to be more effective to their game over ours.
After that game we realized we can compete against the best in the world and it really motivated us to step up our game and increase our intensity in training and future competitions.
This above is a quote from an anonymous source within the team. I applaud the mental outlook yet I must question that if it is just endurance and speed in relation to our game plan that is holding us down then we must address the coaching and preparation of these teams we send abroad. Sadly, I also noticed that we (CAN) went on to finish the tournament poorly which can only point to a lack of fitness relative to the opposition and a lack of tactical preparation from match to match. I will not even mention the level of skill development.
It has been a year for this program without a leader (Master Coach) and the current events are evidence that we are sliding further and further from the competition. Where does this stop? Who is going to ultimately stand up and claim some responsibility for the pathetic state of the game in Canada?
Is it the players? NO - they are committed, dedicated and willing to pay for it themselves. This leaves only the coaching but more importantly the administration.
Solution:
Get rid of Suzanne Nicholson - this cancer has had a shelf life longer than any other known to the human race. Name something positive this person has done in the past 10 years and I will retract my statement!
Say a polite thank you and good bye to Beth Ali - Not capable, knowledgeable, progressive or professional enough for National programs.
By the way who is the selection committee for the potential womens coach????????? Have any of you noticed that no one knows.
John Green - please step down. This is embarassing!
Within the Canadian ranks their are people willing to help who have had a track recored of success and international connections. With their help we can return this program to a successful level but it is going to take more than the standard approach implemented thus far.
Having strong ethics, being great kids and trying their best is a wonderful side result of a successful club program. Representing your country is measured in results. We are not getting the results and we had better start asking the hard questions as to why.

re: can fan
if you will read the comments carefully can fan... i am making my comments towards fhc and not the girls directly..... here is a tiny secret.. i know a fair number of the girls too....that doesn't change my opinion of the program.
yes i am negative about field hockey as it is run in canada, and it looks like i am not the only one.. the management of this sport in canada is abismal... pathetic... full of people who are more interested in self-promotion, getting more airmiles etc. and not people who are interested in doing something for the sport...
there has been ample opportunity when funding was good to do right by the sport, work on building the game, however, due to serious shortsightedness this has not been done, and opportunities were not taken advantage of... field hockey used to be a strong sport in canada, and that is not so anymore and that is because the people who run the sport did not do enough to promote it, to have it picked up at the grass roots etc.
and by the way can fan i don't have a problem with you thinking that the kids are great etc. however, i do have a problem with a person who expects their right to free speech to be supported yet succums to name calling and rude comments when another person uses the same forum to exercise the same right when it is not in line with their own...
i have a right to my opinion, and you have a right to yours.. i didn't call you any names or make comments with respect to your character because yours differed.

players paying
i also worry about a program who has players pay, this seriously discriminates against those potential players from lower scocio-economic backgrounds. So now you can be a part of the national team if your parents make enough money to fund you??? this too is pathetic and another example of FHC and its inept custodianship of public funds

Chile 2004
The tour was a sucess and a wake up call to show us the level of play which we will have to compete at in order to qualify in march. The coaching staff was awesome. As far as funding goes, there are ways to work around it for those who are not as financially stable as others (ie- sponsors, private funding). If you saw the level of play and based your oppinions on that rather then the results you would know what I am talking about. USA, Chile, and Canada where neck and neck throughout the tournment, so on any given day we could have proved to be the better team, unfoutunately that was'nt the case over the last 2 days. As far as taking "inexpierenced players" everyone get's there expierence from somewhere, and this has been a great expierence for all members of the team...walking onto the team as a new member for the World Cup qualifer would have been a lot harder, this way we all gained international expierence, with no so much on the line!

There are some gaps in the logical flow of your argument. You raise some issues about team preparation for the junior team and you ask who is ultimately responsible for the state of the game in Canada.
I can't tell whether you think the performance of the junior team has something to do with Hash's coaching or the general level of the players that Hash has to work with. You also mention that the women's team has no Master Coach. Perhaps you are implying that person would be ultimately responsible for the state of the game in Canada if he/she existed.
However, there is no such thing as a Master Coach and even if there were one, you would have a hard time explaining how one person could or should be ultimately responsible for the state of the game in Canada.
However, you then go on to offer solutions. Given that you have not really clearly defined the problem you are trying to fix, it's impossible to see how your offered solutions offer anything positive. I see nothing positive or useful about firing a bunch of people.
You have suggested that there are people who have been successful - why don't you name them? How do you imagine these successful people are going to take control of ... what - FHC? the women's program? the men's program? BCFHA? the women's junior program ? ... if they don't name themselves. People have to stand up and put their names forward. However, that takes chutzpah.
Incidentally, one of the main reasons I am posting this is to tell you that calling Suzzanne a cancer while keeping your own name secret was not your finest moment.
Suzzanne has done plenty for FHC. I have disagreed with her and recently got seriously angry with her in fact. But I can see that Suzzanne has done plenty and that she has a tough job.
FHC was restructured and much of that was for the better and it was almost entirely due to the hard work and perserverance of Suzzanne. Furthermore, she makes sure our Sport Canada submissions are done well and on time. She takes care of all kinds of things behind the scenes that most of us know nothing at all about and yet matter. Furthermore, she has had to labour under a volunteer Board and volunteer Board's are notoriously difficult to deal with. And I would argue that this Board has been particularly weak. I don't envy Suzzanne her job one little bit.
Finally, Suzzanne is accountable to the Board - it is the Board that is ultimately responsible for Suzzanne's performance. If you really care about ultimate responsibility then in matters pertaining to Suzzanne the Board is where you should be focusing.
However, if you insist on pointing fingers and yelling off with his/her head then I suggest you won't have much credibilty unless you are willing to offer your own credentials. And that would earn you some respect; and it might even cause you to measure your words a bit more carefully - and that might help you to take the time to write your thoughts down a bit more clearly.
Finally, you said if anyone could name something p;ositive Suzzanne has done then you would retract your statement - I look forward to seeing your retraction on this thread.
