Canada: Titan's third annual indoor tournament report

This article was contributed by Cassandra Mendonca who played in the Titan's tournament and at 15 years of age is PlanetFieldHockeys youngest author. Thanks Cassandra!

Junior development has thrived in Toronto over the past year. Titan's annual indoor tournament has confirmed it. It proved to be one of the largest junior events in recent years, having 24 teams from all over Ontario and one team from the United States. The weekend was filled with fierce hockey and competition for those aged six to eighteen. We all could sit back and enjoy the entertainment brought to us by the two under nine teams that took part in an exhibition game on Sunday. We watched as they struggled through their first trials of field hockey and celebrated their triumphs. Over the next few years, we will watch these players develop and become talented athletes, as well as, field hockey players.

The under thirteen division displayed the talents of prospective provincial and national players. Their individual skills not yet fully defined but with a little bit of coaching has come a long way from last season. Every team fought with heart for the gold trophy but only one team could achieve it. This year's champions' trophy was awarded to Toronto Titans. Their teamwork, dedication and love for the sport won them a ticket to a well-fought final which lead to a glamorous win.

In the under eighteen girls division we stood back and watched in awe as we witnessed the improvement in all the high school athletes. Teamwork, not individual talent, won games in this division. Every girl had fire in their eyes as they fought for every loose ball and made every tackle. This year's winner was a team from the United States, the Spirit Eagles. They displayed sportsman-like behaviour and true heart as they claimed their trophy.

The under eighteen boys division produced fast-paced games. Many of the younger athletes watched with dropped-jaws as the boys intimidated everyone with speed and strength. The individual talent, as well as teamwork, was remarkable in this division. It was anybody's tournament. This year the gold medal went to Lions B. They played the game like true champions and showed the world what field hockey players are made of.

Indoor Hockey
You can feel from the article that the atmosphere was great at this tournament.

There are many discussions on this site about developing junior hockey (outside of BC). This is another example that indoor hockey might be a good entry point to our sport for junior players: it is easier to learn the basic skills than on a bumpy grassy field, it is easier to put together a team, it is easier to find a gym than a pitch, etc…
