WHITCHURCH remain in second spot in the English League, despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Formby on their trip to Lancashire.

They threw away a 2-0 advantage and had to settle for a share of the points after Formby produced an inspired second-half performance.

Once again the Whitchurch hero was sharp-shooting Laith El Khatib, who bagged goals from open play after 13 and 33 minutes. Chris Banning came agonisingly close to adding a third just before half-time.

In the second period Formby were a different proposition and the writing was on the wall as soon as Dave Seddon pulled a goal back 10 minutes after the break.

Mounting pressure was rewarded with the equaliser from Richard Thompson 10 minutes from the end and a draw was perhaps a fair result, although Whitchurch were disappointed at not being able to hold onto their advantage.

Whitchurch are now just two points ahead of third-placed Birmingham University, who they face in a crucial match in Cardiff on Saturday in the last round of league games before the Christmas break.

Gareth Thomas collected two goals as Whitchurch A kept up their promotion form in the Gerrard League Premier three with a 5-0 win over visitors Lydney.
