Mark Hager’s record of All-time Leading Scorer (32 goals) is about to vanish as Sohail Abbas also reaches the figure of 32 goals and Pakistani PC Master requires one more goal in at least 210 minutes of hockey left for him and Pakistan .

Mark Hager was a deadly striker in his hey-days and later on occupied the coaching business. He was Assistant Coach of Australian Women hockey team that finished fifth in Athens Olympics 2004. He will swap from the women’s to the men’s program to be the national junior men’s coach – a newly created role. His position commences on 1 January 2005 as Australian team is hoping gold in 8th Junior World Cup 2005 at 8000-seat, 24 million guilder stadium at HC Rotterdam.

Hager played 11 Champions Trophy from 1985-1995 and pocketed nine medals (4 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze)

He scored 179 goals in 230 International Caps 230. His 179 goals are Most international goals by an Australian male player to date. Hager was captain of the Australian men's hockey team that won bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics after a bad luck four years previously. He suffered a stress fracture of his right foot and had to pull out of the Australian squad immediately before the tournament began in Barcelona.

He was previously at the men's intensive training centre coach at the Western Australian Institute of Sport and a specialist coach of the national men's team.

He originally came from Queensland, and played rugby league. His brother played hockey through school .He suffered concussion and had to give football away. Hockey is a team sport and what attracted him most is that he had a dream as a youngster that Australia would never win a hockey gold medal unless he was playing.

Nickname “Horrible”, now living at Perth with three children, Hager will celebrate his 41st birthday on 28 April 2005. His favorite food is BBQ chips and favorite film star is Sharon Stone. He used to enjoy James Bond movies. His role models are rugby international David Campese and Liverpool soccer player Ian Rush.

Record goes
I have had the pleasure of knowing Mark Hager for most of our lives and played with and against him for many years back in Brisbane. We went in different directions in this sport but whenever we met up he always had interesting things to say about the "old times"

One thing is for sure there was no better ambassador of the game than Mark and had things gone a little more smoothly for him, Abbas would have had a few more years to go to catch up to the record.

The main point is that if Hager scored directly from a PC I will eat my helmet. He comes from an era when field goals counted and players like him developed skills that many of today's top strikers only dream about.

He used wooden sticks, had two thirds of one thumb missing as well as several bits of other digits through his work as an engraver where Monday mornings after a post game celebration often left the reflexes a little slow.

But he always managed to put one past many good keepers with that trademark smile behind the bit of fuzz he called a moustache.
