Germany Out Of Gold Medal Race : Lost 1-3 To India
From : Syed Akber Ali Wahidi (Lahore)
World and European Germany went out of Gold medal race when they suffered third consecutive defeat, losing to India 1-3 in Match No. 9 of 26th Champions Trophy at Lahore on 7 December 2004. It was 12th meeting between the two nations in FIHs annual show and Indias fourth win over eight-times Champion in CTs history.
Germany still up with six wins in CTs matches between the two sides although it was Indias second successive win over Germany in CT.
The match was far from excitement. Both the teams were involved in a extra-ordinary thriller 19 years ago at Perths Commonwealth Stadium. The tournament, that produced lot of excitements, was sponsored by Esanda Finance Corporation Limited. An amazing encounter became the part of that show at Western Australia in 1985 when Pargat Singhs brilliant solo effort galvanised India into rallying from 1-5 down to hold West Germany 5-5. Defender Pargat Singh, only player to lead India in two Olympics, added a different meaning to the concept of deep defence. He adhered to the aggressive style, not content to sit back, rather stand back and watch. His style yielded rich dividends in that magnificent match. India were trailing 1-5 against Germany with just 18 minutes to go , but on that particular day, Indians did not lose hoped to strike. And strike they did. One after another India blasted four goals, three in last seven minutes, to make it 5-5. Pargat Singh was one of the scorer. He collected the ball from his own half and ran down the field. Dribbling and dodging, he tore apart the German defence to score a unique goal. Indias leveler emerged in the final minute when Joachim Carvalho converted penalty-stroke.
