KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur swept aside the challenge of the National Juniors to win the Razak Cup hockey title for the eighth consecutive time at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
KL defeated the Juniors 4-1 in the final and the match was virtually decided in the first half.
It was the 16th time in the series that KL lifted the Cup.
They first won the title in 1997 and were also the champions in 1982, 83, 86, 89, 91, 93, 94 and 95.
Yesterday, the match was as good as decided after KL took a 3-0 half-time lead.
National forward Tajol Rosli scored a brace in the 18th and 33rd minute and he was named the man-of-the-match.
EASY WINNERS: The Kuala Lumpur hockey team celebrate after defeating National Juniors 4-1 in the Razak Cup final yesterday.
The other goals for KL came off the penalty corner from Mohamed Amin (24th) and Jiwa Mohan (62nd).
The Juniors were awarded five penalty corners and they managed to convert one through Zulkifli Rejab in the 29th minute.
KL coach S. Sivabalan said: The players made it easy as they complemented each other and were on top of the Juniors in every aspect.
They did not give room for them to attack and more importantly the senior players also performed above expectations. This match was certainly our best in the tournament because we had complete control.
Sivabalan also credited senior players M. Kalisweran, Nor Saiful Zaini and Lawrence Steven for their good performance, which helped the younger players in the team to settle down early.
Perak took third place, beating Malacca 2-1.
Perak scored their goals through Abbas Nekmat (25th) and K. Gobinathan (38th). Nor Hamazi Omar scored for Malacca in the 64th minute.
