Ireland: Watt expects Dale domination x10
December 2, 2004
Belfast Telegraph, UK

Banbridge coach Stephen Watt today predicted an Annadale v Instonians Kirk Cup final to transpire after Sunday's semi-final double-header.
Bangor meet the Old Boys in the curtain-raiser before the eagerly awaited second instalment between holders Annadale and Lisnagarvey.
Watt's team will be hoping to capitalise on three of their main title rivals inaction as in the League Banbridge prepare to face Civil Service on Saturday.
Bann are table-toppers at the moment but Watt insists it is much too early to be talking of trophy possibilities.
"I have been happy with the way things have been progressing this season after a period of rebuilding", he said.
"It's especially pleasing as we have been unable to field a first choice starting XI so far.
"Civil Service are one of the sides to have made progress as well this season and they have a lot of good players who could cause us trouble. We have never found it easy against them so I am expecting Saturday's game to be no different."
Meanwhile, Watt added that he expects Annadale to take most of the honours - not all of them - when they are divided next year.
"They have the strongest squad of players in the country so you would have to predict that they are capable of winning everything, north and south of the border," continued the Bann boss.
"They have strengthened their squad this season and you would have to say that they can do even better than last time around."
The Dale, of course, swept the boards at domestic level in 2003-4 but an all Ireland trophy yet again proved illusive.
First things first, though, and Watt expects them to overcome Lisnagarvey on Sunday to book their place in the Boxing Day showpiece.
"Garvey have done well after losing a couple of players but I think Annadale will get through after a close game," he reasoned.
Turning to the other semi-final most pundits would make Instonians favourites against the seasiders and Watt is no different.
"Like Garvey Inst have lost several players but they have coped extremely well. Bangor, on the other hand, I would think, would have been a little bit disappointed with their League campaign so far.
"I would expect Instonians to get through but, once, again, I think it will be a close call."
The idea of staging the Kirk Cup semi-finals as a Sunday double-header is now in its third year and it has proved to be an outstanding success.
A big crowd is expected at Havelock Park and by that stage, Watt and his Banbridge team could have well extended their lead at the top of the table.
There is just one other Premiership game down for decision on Saturday and that's the meeting of Raphoe in Cookstown in Donegal.

At least those going along to 'Super Sunday' will get to see four positive hockey teams compete, and not watch Banbridge stick 11 men behind the ball and deploy their negative defensive tactics and spoil the game! I watched the Garvey / Annadale and Garvey / Inst games earlier in the year and both games were fantastic to watch with both sides playing great hockey! I have also seen Bangor earlier in the year and they too try to play nice hockey. Im looking forward to this weekend, and lets hope that the hockey on display is worth watching!!

Super Sunday
I agree, Bann are awful to watch. Not sure that Swottys predictions will come true though, Annadale seem to choke everytime they get to the latter stages of All-Ireland cmpetitions! Maybe the more 'experienced' players they have now will help them in this regard. Lets just hope that positive hockey teams win out in the end.

Strength
I think Cork Harlequins might have something to say about Annadale having the 'strongest squad in the country'

International Training Squad
A good point from Geoff. What rubbish "Annadale - strongest squad of players in the country". Look at the facts Stephen: The recently announced 29-player training squad has the following club breakdown:
Cork Harlequins: 5 (1 reserve)
Cork CoI: 4 (2 reserves)
Pembroke Wanderers: 4
Annadale: 3 (2 reserves)
Lisnagarvey: 3 (1 reserve)
Instonians: 3
KHC Dragons: 2
Dublin University: 2
Cookstown: 1
Corinthian: 1
Banbridge: 1
Glenanne: (1 reserve)
Aer Lingus: (1 reserve)
Monkstown: (1 reserve)
Pretty obvious to me what clubs have the strongest squads!!!

but seriously lets remember what the prize is for winning the semi final. Playing on Boxing day or if that is cancelled, News Year Day to try and win the Kirk Cup... What does it get you - Nothing. Doesn't get you Irish recognition or entry to europe or anything. Just ruins christmas for those players who have a life outside of hockey. POssibly the 2 main days of a year ruined because you don't hear if the boxing day final will be postponed until that morning, so christmas day is over without a few drinks by then, and then the new years day final, well you only get told late on new years eve if that is going to be postponed. Too late to get into any bars in belfast by that time!!!
why not move it to the first weekend in january?

Strength
Have to agree with Geoff Capes about harlequins rightly laying claim to the 'strongest squad in the country'. You only have to look at the new irish training panel to see where the real strength lies. Quigley, smith and robb all left out...nicholson, eakins, j black, m black and bateman all included. Enough said.

Re: Mozzarella
I think you don't realize that when NI reporters here in NI write a report for an NI paper they send it on to Planetfieldhockey. Swotty said Annadale has the strongest squad in the 'country'...which is perfectly correct. Northern Ireland is a country. We don't write in NI newspapers week-in week out and actually report about how strong Harlequins are or any other team in the South...we don't care...the people in Ulster reading the papers don't care!!!
Maybe you should get your reporters in the South to send in their articles...then you guys would have something to write about here!!!

It's clear to see from the Irish squad that Quins and CI have the strongest squads but then they have the advantage over Ulster and Leinster clubs by being afforded the luxury of having two teams in the Munster first division. Any young player in Cork is discouraged from playing with other clubs and "encouraged" to join the big two with all kinds of promises. It seems ironic to have the Munster Branch pushing for a National League when hockey is dying a slow death in Munster.
