The Scottish Hockey Union today announced a 41-strong squad to take part in an assessment weekend for places in the national U18 girl’s team.

The recent Inter-District championships were used as part of the selection process to identify athletes with the potential to make the squad. The girls will come together for an intensive weekend’s training at the National Hockey Academy at Peffermill on the weekend of 15-16 January 2005.

The squad contains a mix of players, some who already have experience of playing in the National set up either at U16 or U18 level and some new players who caught the eye of the selectors, including RAF Careers Cup winning captain and player of the tournament Sophie Lynch of Watsonians.

All seven of the girls’ districts are represented in this assessment squad which is entirely home based, though for some, home is a long way from Peffermill, especially for Orkney’s Hannah Johnstone.

U18 Team Coach, Lizzie Sturrock said: "This group of girls provides us with an exciting mix of established players and some great new talent coming through. Determining who will make the final squad will be no easy task and I’m looking forward to putting the girls through their paces to see what they can do."

The girls will be competing for places in the team whose main focus for 2005 is the European Youth Trophy in Siauliai, Lithuania in July next year.

Selection?!?
I am very surprised, and I believe I'm not the only one, that if there's goign to be a 41-strong assessment squad, why on earth arguably two of the better north girls were not included?
H.F. and A.W. are ten times better than J.T., and she somehow got named?!!
She didn't even play whole tournament-injured on 1st day!!
No disrespect meant but she will struggle, and I think two great players have been over looked!!

northerner...
totally agree! think some of it was to do with the coach being club biased when making position selections- from what i saw one the best players (who played RM last yr in better squad) was played out of position for entire tournament-destroyed her chance of selection.

I don't understand how anyone could be left out of the HUGE assessment squad 'if' they deserved to be there!!!! 41 is a hell of a lot, didn't know Scotland was producing that many good players at u18. Ha Ha....... what a joke.... who do they think they're kidding! Do ALL these girls really think they stand a chance? Seems to me there is a huge divide between the good, skillful, talented players and the weak, average schoolgirl hockey players! Suppose that will make the selectors job easier!
