Canterbury coach Danny Kerry is the surprise choice to be England women's head coach.

Along with Jason Lee's appointment for the men's side, the governing body have put their faith in youth rather than experience.

Kerry, 33, has led Canterbury's women team since 2001 and took them to a silver medal in the European Cup Winners Cup in Holland earlier this year.

He has also been involved in various England youth programmes with both the men and women and more recently he worked with the women's England 'B' squad and seniors.

Kerry, a senior lecturer in sports science at Canterbury's Christ Church University College in Kent, will take up his post on January 1

The 34-year-old Lee has been acting England head coach since leading Great Britain at this summer's Athens Olympics and is currently with the squad for matches in Holland.

Philip Kimberley, chairman of both England Hockey and World Class Hockey, said: "I'm delighted that these two came through the interview process so strongly and believe we have in Jason and Danny two really high quality young coaches for the future.

"We believe these appointments further demonstrate England Hockey's desire to look to the future and for England to regain its position as one of the top hockey nations in the world.

"We also believe that these are exciting times for both the men's and women's international teams as we have an excellent group of young players ready to show their skills at senior level."

Absolute rubbish. What ever happened to the statement about appointing the best coaches in the world. No disrespect to Danny, but her doesn't even come close.

Welcome to the top job Danny! You had better get used to this abuse because it will be constant.
Just seek solace in the fact that it comes from ignorant, negative and pathetic brains.
JB, you can only appoint the best coaches in the world if they want the job so why not reflect on the possibility that it could be peole like you who prevent them from applying.
The countries which take most abuse on this shoddy website are GB, USA and Canada - and look at the trouble they have had in finding quality candidates to lead their national programmes.
It is a brave person who takes the England position given the politics, the expectations and the unwarranted criticism they encounter and for that fact alone, Kerry deserves some support.
