Canterbury coach Danny Kerry is the surprise choice to be the next head coach of England's women's hockey team.
The 33-year-old has led Canterbury's women's team since 2001 and took them to a silver medal in the European Cup Winners Cup in Holland this year.

Kerry, who has also worked with various England youth programmes and with the England B and seniors squad, will take up his new post on 1 January.

He replaces previous coach Tricia Heberle, who stood down in April.

Irrational
I am slighlty confused by this decision.

No disrepect to Danny but it undermines our whole development pathway and basically says says to coaches - if you want to be a senior coach, have nothing to do with U16,U18, U21 or assist at senior level.

Why haven't we appointed Hobley, Brown, Passmore or Crutchley? What this tells any aspiring coaches out there is - don't get involved in our set up as it will lead you no where. Doing so gives you too much baggage!!

I wish Danny luck but also some advice - ensure you have some people around you who know the women's game.

Let's face it. The players in England know more than the coaches about what's best for them!!

Bad appointment. Wrong choice - watch England lose to Ukraine etc.

The structure and management are to blame, not Danny.

Congrats Danny. I know through your involvement in the junior age groups that you will shine a new light on the womens senior squad. However, i too believe that a number of players will suddenly return to the fold. I think this is disgraceful. There have been a number of players involved with England since the disappointment of not qualifying who have worked very hard and committed a great deal. I believe that the players who have been hanging around, waiting to see who the new coach is will have to work very hard to prove their commitment and should not be assessed on previous performances or how well they played FOR CANTURBURY!

Coaches
Danny apparently is a good coach and I will not critisise him but we do appear to have missed the boat here. England teams need leaders, Jason has come through a hard 18 months and now can provide that, but Danny has no experience.
It appears once again that this is a soft choice, the three or four coaches in this country who have really achieved have once again been overlooked. Copp - gone to France as was never given a leadership role, Royce, great tactical coach, just needed a strong manager. Jennings, part of the most succesful women's team ever, what happened to the women after he left? Vinson, tactically astute but some non-conformist ideas. All these people never given leadership roles. Why? Are we scared of them? Do we feel we can't manage them? Surely if performance is the focus we should have the best coaches and then worry about their other characteristics, managing those if they are an issue. Have we lost our performance focus because we are compromising roles because we want someone who will be low maintenance and fits in a nice little box? That's what it looks like, people scared to appoint a truly strong and passionate character. I don't think Hendricks, Oltmans, Jorrissima (?), Charlesworth and even the much acclaimed Mr Self ever fitted in a comfortable box - they didn't do badly though did they?

Lesley Hobley is the Welsh women's coach, Passmore the Irish men's and Brown and Crutchley level two coaches. None of them has any international experience unless of course you count an association with English women's hockey over the last few years and that is hardly a recommendation or a qualification.

Danny might prove to be a good choice in the long term, only time will tell. None of the above have either the talent or the experience necessary. Danny might have the talent, although his track record gives no real indication one way or the other, but he does not have the experience required by EH in their job advert nor even the minimum qualifications they set down. Strange that, did no foreign coach apply?

It will be interesting to watch what other top flight international coaches are added to his support staff, maybe Brown and Crutchley those leading lights of the level two's will add their years of coaching experience to help him out, after all their support of the GB team was so influential in their success. Opps!! Sorry failure.

To "player as well". What exactly do you mean by how many of the girls will come out of retirement now? and yes I was also very suprised bobby, karen or dave not getting the job. Good luck to danny though at least we have someone appointed and now maybe we can get on with the programme.

Not from canterbury....
You are obviously talking rubbish...have you even come into contact with him? because if you had i am sure you would understand his knowledge for the womens game and hockey in general...which is far more vast than any other coach around. And as for being involved with the england set up? What does that have to do with anything? Since when do you have to coach u16, u18s and u21s to do a great job?
But anyway that is besides the point as you have your facts wrong as he has been involved with junior men as well as being involved with a number of the u21s women being apart of coaching start and potential players as well as coaching england B.
And as for Hobley, Brown, Passmore or Crutchley?
Are u suggesting these would have been a better appointment? hmmm.
I think its a great appiontment....will be a great chance to show everyone what england has been missing.

Fact of the matter is Kerry is a good choice, only limitations I can see is that he has never been involved at the highest level in the womens game and therefore does not have that background knowledge. Royce faced the same problems, thought he knew the game and the PLAYERS and when the crunch came was found wanting. In hindsight I know he would have done things differently.I hope Danny does not make the same mistake. My advise would be, get a good assistant, the one who can tick all the boxes that Danny can't is obviously Brown, ahead of all the other people mentioned on this site. She may not have coached at this high level yet but she has more experience than anyone else in this country into the International game through her playing career, Danny would be wise to use that experience.if they can work together and have a good working relationship England should move forward with confidence. I wish Kerry every success.

I think poor Canterbury...think they will suffer without him.

As for the England job..sure he will do his homework but wether he can translate that to his players is a different matter..he needs a really good right hand man or woman and then we may see success.

Sorry don't understand your comments.
Brown and Crutchley are at present level two's they are taking as I understand it their level 3 is it their fault that it takes 18 months to two years to get the qualification. Also, what was Brown, Passmore and Hobleys association with the GB team. I think you need reminding that ENGLAND rose to fifth in the world , the input these coaches had in Englands result was............. I am not sure but don't damn them for being involved in a GB programme that they clearly were not involved in. Perhaps you should get your facts right before you post opinions about coaches that are NOT mentioned or associated with the article. That is unjust and unfair. Kerry will I hope do a good job, Passmore , Hobley and Brown will also do a good job coaching what ever teams they work with in the future, why, because all three have talent as does Kerry, we should support all of them.

danny kerry
danny had to leave our camp half way to take up his post as the womens coach, best of luck to him and im sure all of the team wish him the best too.
The fact is that even with the little time he spent with us, i learnt so so much from him, and the lads did too, he is the man when it comes to technical stuff, and his coaching style is hard, but equally fair, and he gives criticism and praise. Superb choice maded by England hockey, look what Canterbury have done, i believe a reflection will be seen in the national side! good luck DK!!

cause or effect
It is too simplistic to suggest that Kerry has made Canterbury good. In this league a side with six or 7 international players will almost always be winning.
How well did Canterbury do last season without regular use of their internationals. relegated in the indoor, and pedestrian results in the league.
So, I do not buy the notion that Kerry is good based on Canterbury riding high at present.
The argument could be made that any reasonable coach could have done the same with this side.
So is it not Canterbury then that have given a good technician and very poor man manager a shot at glory with the england team....hmm me wonders..

DK appointment
I wish DK all the best and hope he can earn England/GB success for all our sakes. He is a superb tactician and I feel with the right support he will succeed. As for not knowing the International Ladies sides you must be joking... he has studied every video available for all major international competions. He is a hockey geek he eats, sleeps and dreams hockey. I don't think a lot of the senior players who retired after New Zealand will be prepared to re think again their lives. Most of them have found that there is a life outside a training camp. Club is one thing international quite another especially with DK at the helm he will expect totally dedication because that is what he will give.
Is it true??

Nothing against Danny Kerry but as a player from another club, and aspiring (should be) international, I am amazed what I just read in the newspaper. Kerry gets appointed, Clewlow wants to come back. Hmmmmmmm

Should this be allowed? I thought she had retired. I have been busting my gut in the gym, driving miles on the road and may well miss out........why? because someone has changed their mind about whether or not they want to play for England. Either you do or you don't......Don't see many footballers like that!

Players
Before Danny asks Clewlow, King, Walker, Grant, Greenham etc to rejoin the England fold, perhaps he should check on their absolute commitment and passion to the cause, which unfortunately was all too lacking.
Leave this lot behind, Danny, bring in the new young ones who will fight for their places rather than take them for granted.
Don't revisit past errors - out with the old, in with the new. It is not just past coaches who should be associated with past failures, players have to take some of the responsibility and the ones I mentioned were never able to stand up and be counted WHEN IT MATTERED.
