LAHORE, Pakistan (AFP) - Pakistan's midfielder Waseem Ahmed will captain the national hockey team in the prestigious Champions Trophy here next month, an official has said.

"Waseem will lead Pakistan's 18-man squad and we hope the team will do its best to win the trophy," Pakistan Hockey Federation president Abdul Aziz Khan said as he announced the squad on Thursday.

"This is a strong team and we hope that they bring the glory of hockey back to our country," said Khan, a former military general.

The 27-year-old Waseem led Pakistan to a 4-2 win in the hockey series against arch rivals India two months ago.

Pakistan face world champions Germany in their first match of the 26th edition of the trophy, which runs from December 4-12.

Defending champions the Netherlands, Spain, New Zealand and India are the other teams taking part in the competition, which was started by Pakistan in 1978.

Olympic champions Australia, the only side to have played in all 25 previous editions of the event, have pulled out over security fears in Pakistan.

India, who finished seventh at the Athens Olympics in August this year, took their place.

"This is also a good chance for us to tell the world that Pakistan is a safe place to stage international events," said Khan, whose federation suffered financially after the 2001 event was moved to the Netherlands for security reasons.

Pakistan last won a major field hockey title in 1994 at the World Cup in Sydney. The last of their three Champions Trophy titles also came in 1994, in Lahore.

Pakistan's Dutch coach Roelant Oltmans said any of the teams could win the trophy.

"Every match is like the final because the Champions Trophy is the toughest event in the sport," said Oltmans, whose year-long contract expires after the tournament.

Pakistan's trump card will be penalty corner expert Sohail Abbas, who recently became the highest international scorer in field hockey history with 268 goals.

Center-half Mohammad Saqlain returns to the side after missing this year's Athens Olympics and the series against India on disciplinary grounds.

Squad: Salman Akbar and Nasir Ahmed (goalkeepers), Sohail Abbas, Mohammad Imran, Zeeshan Ashraf (full backs), Mohammad Waseem, Ghazanfar Ali, Adnan Maqsood, Mohammad Saqlain, Dilawar Hussain (midfielders), Rehan Butt, Mudassar Ali, Kashif Jawwad, Tariq Aziz, Shabbir Hussain, Adnan Zakir, Shakil Abbasi, Akhtar Ali (forwards), Roelant Oltmans (coach), Samiullah Khan (manager).

I agree ... little bit. Pakistan has a big chance for a comeback, but they had chances before and they screwed it up. So if I were you I wouldn't exspect too much :)
I think they'll end up third after Holland and Germany... If they don't get screwed by Spain again...

I think pakistan is a very good chance to win this trophy because this time pakistan will play in their home ground secondly two big tams are coming without full strenght. And pakistan has good record in home.

And LUCKLY THIS IS A SAME GROUND ON WHICH PAKISTAN WON THEIR LAST CHAMPION TROPHY.

WE WANT TO SEE THE CUP IN THE HANDS OF WASEEM AHMED.

GOOD LUCK PAKISTAN

MAY ALLAH HELPS YOU

The complete modern player !
I wish Waseem the best of luck as the captain of Pakistan team due to take part in the 2004 CT.

Waseem is the complete modern player ,with vision ,good tackling and amazing stickwork and above all his confident composure when in possession of the ball. He never seems hurried and gives the impression he has all the time in the world , no matter how many opponents may be around him. A sign of a great player and to use Ric Charlesworth's words " the little Wizard ".

I wish Pakistan and all the other teams best of luck !

I hope the eventual winners do so by playing "attacking hockey , scoring field goals "

Good record at Lahore
I agree Pakistan has a very good record at Lahore.
1988 CT - Silver
1990 WC - Silver
1994 CT - Gold
1998 CT - Silver
But nothing should taken for granted.
NZ has shown great support for Pakistan by arriving early and dismissing the security concerns. I wish NZ a good tournament.

you forgot first championstrophy played at Lahore in 1978 which Pakistan won(Gold) beating Australia in finals....

I think spain & Holland will have more chances to win but I hope Pakistan's secret weapon suhail abbas will make a difference for sure and may cause upsets to big teams like holland, spain,Ger .....wish all the best for Pakistan to win and bring back glory to the country!

Nice to see a master class player captaining pak again. Pak have got now very reliable and experienced defence. If forward plays well pak will win CT.
Hoping a full-house in final at Nation Hockey Stadium Lahore (there were around 80000 in 94)
