Senior Squad Set for South Africa

The Scottish Hockey Union today announced a 20-strong senior men’s squad for their training camp in Potchesfstroom, South Africa next month.

The squad list has a familiar look as it contains the majority of the team who contested the Senior Celtic Cup in Dublin during the summer. But the team is boosted by the welcome return of two of its Olympians, Dundee Wanderers’ Niall Stott who is currently on terrific goal-scoring form for his club, plus Cheltenham-based Graham Moodie, who now plays his club hockey for Cannock. Fellow Olympian Graham Dunlop and Team GB travelling reserve David Mitchell will miss the trip due to work commitments.

A number of young players have been included in the squad once again, continuing their transition from the U21 ranks to senior status. They include Inverleith’s Alan and Stephen Dick, U21 Captain Craig Harper, and Kelburne’s Gavin Sommerville.

The squad will be based at the PUK Hockey Academy in Potchesfstroom used by Team GB and other national squads during their build up for the Athens Olympics. The centre, part of the Potchesfstroom University campus, offers fantastic on-site facilities, while its location close to Johannesburg means that the team will benefit from training at altitude.

Commenting on the trip, Team Manager Eugene Connolly said "With only nine months until the Europeans it was important that we started our build-up with some intensive training time as a squad. The South Africa trip will not only provide the best possible setting for us to do that but also focuses the training with matches against good opposition."

The team management will use the trip to assess the players to take the Scots on the trail of A Division status in the European Cup.

Scotland are scheduled to play a series of five matches against the South African U21 side and South Africa A during their two week stay.

14 December - South Africa A vs Scotland

15 December - South Africa U21 vs Scotland

17 December - South Africa A vs Scotland

I can't believe ally mcdougall hasn't been selected. How can we possibly have a Scotland squad without the outstanding genius of Scottish hockey? I ask you. Next you'll be telling me they haven't picked any Kane brothers either...

Surely there is a comedian selecting this squad. Paddy Conlon? Craig Harper? Mansouri? Hall?
I have played with or against everyone of these players this season and have no doubt that there is far better talent out there to be selected. These players are pants!

no one cares how many goals stevie dick has scored he is the only one who can score of the purple pounces. let see if the return of stotty and moodie will give Scotland the edge and do well this year and maybe get into the commonwealth games if callum woods doesn't do what he done the last time.

ps Stotty is the best player in Scotland and soon so will his little bro Ross who is one of the best youth players around just now

who are you kidding, ross will never be as good as his bro. The top U-18's just now are Micheal Christie (hoping he comes back from injury just as strong) and Andrew sinclair, soon to emerge from dickies shadow i'm sure.

Is that gordi munro from the dale? Hes a top player but got a bit of a hot head. Still though scoring 20 goals shows hes got good tallent and potential. But what district or Scotland coach has given him time of day! Its a disgrace how such a player with his undenyable pace and traction isnt in there!....................Ps...... selection
everyone is talking about the inclusion, or exclusion of the players. what about the coaching staff??? was david stott not just in charge of the junior men??? they got pumped in europe, and did not only miss out on quaification for the junior world cup next year, but were relegated from the A division for 2 years time! this is a massive missed opportunity for the next generation of players, and a huge amount of money will have been wasted as a result. so now why have the shu got him assisting with the senior men? this seems like suicide!

it seems crazy that david stott is assistant coach! over 70 thousand pounds was pumped into the u21's and where did that go-to the B division! ive also heard that he doesnt like mathias, thinks he is hypicritical, and will not listen to others opinion. so why is he working with him?

Stop personal vilification!
The views of "interested" and "on the inside" would appear to be touched with bitterness! Failed players perhaps!

Seems to me that a reality check for both would be in order - for those of us who were there as players. parents and supporters, the U21's were relegated to "B" division and failed to qualify for the JWC and yes it was painful.

Was it surprising?

No!

The squad was hamstrung by players who were "not available" and the squad selected was the best available to all intents and purposes.

Some of our players were playing week in week out at too low a level to make the transition to the quality of competition and despite the narrowing of the gap during the programme could not achieve the required results in the tournament itself.

Can you blame the coach for this?

I don't think the coaching team are to blame for the lack of depth in Scottish Hockey - of the U18 group in Hamburg 2001 very few players have made the step to U21 and the reasons for this may be the cause of our downfall. (Chris Traynor. Jonny Christie, Chris Nelson, Craig Harper, Derek Salmond, Allan Dick only current players I can remember from Hamburg - sorry if I missed anyone else!)

Spending money on its own will not give us success - Glasgow Rangers are a perfect example from football - it will come from grass roots development with identified talented players gaining experience in the highest level of competition available to them from the earliest age possible (but Scotland don't participate in Europe at U16 so it will get worse!)

Attacking players, coaches or management solves nothing - perhaps if you were to put your mind to solving the problem we might just get somewhere!

This chat of munro for the full scotland team is rediculous. Despite what he thinks (which is very highly of himself) the fact is that he wasn't good enough to play for under 18 west district last year, never mind even the under 18 scotland squad. A someone who has played with and agains him, believe me, he is nothing special at all. Has it not occured to anyone that maybe he is an average player in a good team?

yeah he aint good enough for the scotland team! But after playin against him for years i finally spoke to him last week at the districts! He admits he does get hot headed on the pitch but he does not think highly of himself off it! He was a laugh and the fact that he commutes over an hour each way to play and train for clydesdale shows he has a love and passion for the sport! So bored if u play in div 1 ul be playing against him next year and see if you still think the same way

Bored...you wont be calling him average when he pops a couple past you next time you play him! He was by far good enough to play scotland u18 last year, but was not picked for the districts as the coach did not see eye to eye with him. he has improved his attitude tremendously over the last couple of seasons, and is a great guy. dont go shooting people down when you dont know them. sounds to me like youre a wee bitty scared of jobaldo taking the p*ss out of you on and off the park!!!!! thats if he hasnt done so already!!!
