Kuala Lumpur: Long serving President of the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) Sultan Azlan Shah has officially annouced he will not seek re-election during the up-coming biennial General Meeting on Dec 20.
"Azlan Shah has officially handed in his decision to MHF today, stating that he would not seek re-election and his Private Secretary Datuk Abdul Rahim Mohamad Nor had also informed us via phone of the decision," said MHF Acting Honorary Secretary T. Paramalingam here on Friday.
Paramalingam said the decision meant the president and deputy president's posts would be up for grabs as MHF Deputy President Tan Sri P. Alagendra who had held the post since 1981 had also declined re-election.
Sultan Azlan Shah who started off as deputy president to the late Tun Abdul Razak during the 1970-1972 term, became the president in 1981, taking over from the late Tun Hussein Onn.
During the Munich Olympics in 1972, he served as team manager of the national hockey team and through his efforts the country hosted the World Cup twice - in 1975 and 2002.
It is learnt form reliable sources that Azlan Shah's son Raja Nazrin Shah would be nominated by a few states to fill the post of president.
"Both Azlan Shah and Alagendra have been around for a long time and they have given all they can but we feel the new faces will be able to bring in new ideas and proposals to move MHF forward," said one of the source.
With the race open, a strong fight is expected for the deputy president's post between Datuk Abdul Rahim Ariff, Roy Rajasingham, George Koshy and Dr. S.S. Cheema. - Bernama
