England go down

Hockey: Dave Mathews and Mark Pearn scored a goal in each half but it was not enough to prevent a young and inexperienced England team from losing 3-2 to Belgium, who led 3-1 at the break, in the first match at Bisham Abbey yesterday. The sides meet in a second international this morning.

inexperienced?
I doubt the English team was less experienced or younger then the Belgian team facing them with a couple of 16 and 17 year old newbies...

Belgium
I've seen the belgians play several times and if GB struggles against them, it goes to show how much they really need to improve. At least Lee's taken the first right step of getting the youngsters in. What astonishes me the most is the lack of control and skill GB have.

Answer to GB United
If ever their was a answer to the GB united arguement this was it if i remember rightly wales (Supposedly a second rate home nation) only lost 3-2 to the full belgium side early this year . Considering the push by the EHL for the poorer nations to join england i dont blame the welsh and scotish for believing they can go it alone after this result.

half the problem with hockey and british sport in general is that we constantly moan at our players when we lose.

Goals & plenty of skill
Payne would walk the england set up and any national div 1 team, but I know his Dad and he takes crap no nobody and I wonder if the saying goes "father like son". Ben Payne is fit, skillful, and reads a game of hokey from any position he has been asked to play. "you don't get many of those in Lee current squad". Jackson has the potential to go all the way to GB, but he has to get into the england under 18 squad, Difficult with the current nepotism amongst the selectors.
I think Jason Lee actually knows Ben Payne and his father, so this could be the stumbling block !!

Jerome
Tom, I agree that Jerome is what is needed midfield, not up front, but he has just had an operation on his shoulder which he has put off for a couple of years, so I look forward to him being fully fit next March and being played where he his skills can be most effective

goals & plenty of skills
I agree with Payne EG's center forward, can also play midfield i'm told, the best player I have played against in the league so far this season. Got everything: skill, awareness, vision and the ability to score goals. Bet a number of div 1 teams know about him already and would welcome his services. He is a lucky guy he has KB as player coach who has obviously got the best out of him !!. If we had him we would certainly get promotion. scores all his goals from open play and creates oppotunities for his team mates.

PAYNEE
JASON LEE WAS COACHED BY DAVID PAYNE WHEN HE PLAYED FOR EG UNDER 18 & 21 TEAMS ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF VERY TALENTED YOUNGSTERS 5 OF WHICH WENT ON TO PLAY FOR ENGLAND AND 3 FOR GB. JASON AND PAYNEE (AS HE HIS KNOWN) ARE MATES SO DON'T START FEEDING THIS BOARD WITH RUBBISH THAT JASON HAS AN AGENDA TOWARD THE PAYNE FAMILY OTHER THAN A POSITIVE ONE. I HAVN'T SPOKEN TO PAYNEE FOR A LONG TIME, BUT I AND MANY OTHERS OWE HIM, AND YOU ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE.
GOOD LUCK TO BEN, AND IF HE IS GOOD ENOUGH, HE WILL MAKE IT UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF JASON, AND TO HIS DAD THANKS A MILLION.

Paynee
This guy was my motivator as a junior member at EG and we all had great fun playing in his teams. We traveled with the EG junior teams to France, Germany and Holland and guess what ? Paynee underwrote most of the cost for those youngsters who couldn't afford the expense. Whats he doing now ? do let me know.
A great guy and asset to junior hockey.

Satvinder 'Sauce' Bhogal
This guy plays for Barford and could bring something new into the England squad. Currently he is performing really well and could do with some international experience. Maybe he is part of the future.

GB
If GB are to improve as a team and be better then teams such as Belgium as once they were - easily, I believe we should encourage more individual skills, as I look at the majority of the GB players and no one can argue, they have poor individual ability. (I am talking about the international stage here). During the Olympics I was dissapointed with the ability to simply hold onto the ball. I see the Aussies and nearly all of their players have skill as well as speed, our GB players don't. This has to be down to way younsters are taught to play hockey here. I feel we should encourage skillfull youngsters to play a skillful game instead of always concentrating on bare basics. Practising skills during training would obviously help, I know even clubs like Surbiton don't, instead make players concentrate on fitness by running up and down the pitch. I'm sorry but for me, any training on the pitch should be with a stick in hand.
(I'm not having a go at Surbiton, it's just an example)

England Prospect !!
Does that mean because I can do 100m in 10.9 sec and the mile in 4m 45 sec I should be selected for england based on the current selection policy !!.
I agree with MahaR posting that we don't have the skillful ball players in our current england & GB teams, but skill must be coupled together with good fitness and attitude.
Our showing at the Olympics was bad: NO vision. LOW ball skill levels and a general lack of team play.

re: A hopeful
I think what mahar means is that pitch time should be for 'stick and ball', fitness work can be done away from the pitch, to an extent (as you'll only ever be 100% when you are match 'sharp').

From my experience of playing county and regional hockey training was always based on fitness. One coach who I had for a period of time was totally different his philosophy was that at training we concentrate on stick skills! No surprise then he was forced out of his role by superiors. The person who took over reverted back to the typical english style. Training got a lot less fun!

Payne and Payne Snr
Other than KB, Paynee's the best player Prem 2 has at the mo. Still a pathetic boozer though. His old man still goes to all the games and helps and umpires the juniors. Huge asset to the EG set-up and the biggest reason why Paynee and many of the EG guys are the players they are today. Great family to be involved with - friendly, hospitable and always a spare bed (even if you have to share with Paynee and maybe a couple other drunk EG guys). Keep up the good work EG - see you in Prem 1 next season!

No wonder our hockey is not keeping parity with other international counties.
What a statement when a young regional player admits training is boring. Let me tell you and you can check this information out quite easily, our continental cousins spend over 75% of any training programme "STICK-ON-BALL". We are obsessed on 100% fitness over hockey talent and must take a more realistic approach to training and start making it enjoyable for the chaps, that way the young men will look forward to every training session and therefore be "UP FOR IT". makes sense to the average person, but then we an't all average people !!.

Paynee
I remember Mr Payne, he stayed with my family in Holland during under 21 tournament at our club many years ago. He coached East Grinstead under 21 team who won the competition. They beat the Dutch - German and French U21 club champions. He is a good friend of my Dad who sees him everytime Paynee visits Holland on business or my Dad goes to London. My Dad tells me some crazy things about what they got upto on tours, which Paynee alway's led from the front.
My Dad sends his best wishes to Paynee and East grinstead Hockey Club.
