Revenge was sweet for the South African men's hockey team against Egypt at the Olympic Games today.
The Proteas qualified for the ninth-place play-off by whipping the African champions 5-1.
Egypt had forced South Africa to get to the Olympics the hard way when they beat them through a golden goal in injury time at the All Africa Championships in Egypt last year.
Craig Jackson's side had to go through a qualifying tournament in Madrid earlier this year and sit through an appeal by Greece to see if they would be allowed to play in Athens.
Yesterday, South Africa showed Egypt who they thought were the true champions of Africa.
South Africa's star player was Greg Nicol who scored three goals.
Nicol worked a penalty corner variation with Steve Evans to open the scoring and Craig Fulton banged in the second.
Ahmed Adnan then flicked in a penalty stroke for Egypt.
South Africa rode a barrage of Egyptian attacks early in the second half before extending their lead through Emile Smith.
Another two goals from Nicol completed the rout.
