Greg Nicol scored a hat trick Wednesday to lead South Africa to a 5-1 win over African rival Egypt in the classification stage of the men's Olympic Hockey tournament.

South Africa will now play for ninth spot against Britain, which beat Argentina 4-1. Egypt play Argentina for 11th spot.

Emile Smith and Craig Fulton scored South Africa's other goals. Adnan Ahmed scored for India.

In semifinals later Wednesday, Australia plays Spain and the Netherlands face Germany to decide who will contest the gold medal.

In other classification matches, New Zealand plays Korea and Pakistan meets India.

Nicol is a Phenomenom - enjoy him while he lasts!
i have lost count of how many goals nicol has scored this week but it is at least 6 or 7. in atlanta he was the joint top goalscorer with 7 goals - sa came 10th. no doubt he is on track to repeat this performance.

it is a travesty that he will retire at the end of the athens olympics with most people in sa not knowing who he is. he is a phenomenom that we are unlikely to see again in a long time in both sa and in world hockey.

Wales you are 100% correct. Greg is 29 years and 5months old. I believe he needs to keep playing especially as he is still heavily involved in marketing himself in hockey. Charlesworth was close to 36 when he played his last olympics. Sponsorship and other avenues need to be put in place to continue his involvement for at least the next two years. Knowledgeable FIH Coaches really rated the SA Men's performance at Athens. Roelant Oltmans praised them in his presentation to the FIH Coaching Conference. He pointed out that if they could have maintained their first half performances in all their games after the first one, they would have won their pool(ironically they came back to win the first game after being 0-1 down). He and others present acknowledged that SA had surprised with the level of their play. Compliments to Revs and the Coaching staff. The challenge is to make sure that the team continues in this groove and that the mistakes made after Atlanta when too much experience was allowed to retire and we then failed to qualify for the 2000 W Cup, are not repeated.
