India came from behind to record a remarkable 4-2 win against South Africa and keep their Olympic medal hopes alive in the men's hockey comeptition here today.

Trailing 0-2 at one stage, the eight-time gold medallists showed their class to emerge victorious in the thrilling contest, which they needed to win to remain on track for a semifinal berth from Pool B.

India, who had lost their opening encounter to the Netherlands, were greatly served by their three most senior players -- Dhanraj Pillay, Baljit Singh Dhillon and Dilip Tirkey, all of whom scored a goal apiece before Gagan Ajit Singh's last minute goal brought the emphatic win for the side.

Greg Nicol and Craig Fulton scored for the South Africans, who had won their first match against Argentina on Sunday.

Quite like the match against Holland, India suffered an early reverse when Nicol scored from South Africa's first penalty corner in the 7th minute.

India's misery was compounded further when Fulton's field goal five minutes later forced them to rethink their strategies.

The Asian side, which hardly tested the opposition goalkeeper for the major part of the first half, regrouped themselves after the twin blows and made some incisive moves which resulted in the side getting a penalty corner in the 27th minute.

Tirkey's firm hit from the set piece was saved by a diving South African goalkeeper David Staniforth but a lurking Dhanraj Pillay rushed ahead and tapped the ball in much to the delight of the Indian supporters present in the stands.

South Africa defended stoutly for the remaining time of the first half and went to the half time 1-2.

The second half saw the Indians dominating from the word go and coming up with several attempts on the rival goal.

The repeated attacks earned the side their second penalty corner which was intelligently put in by Dhillon in the 42nd minute for the equaliser.

Both the sides pressed hard to get the lead and in the process dished out some exciting hockey. But none could give the finishing touches to the several moves made in the next few minutes.

A yellow card to Ryan Ravenscroft in the 59th minute raised India's hopes but South Africa with 10 men fought bravely to thwart the rampaging opposition forwards.

The score remained 2-2 till the very end before captain Dilip Tirkey emerged the hero scoring from a penalty corner a minute before the hooter.

With just seconds to go for the end of the match, Gagan Ajit completed the formalities slamming home from a quick counter attack.

In other matches of the day, South Korea beat Britain 3-1 in Pool A while in Pool B, Argentina held Australia to a 2-2 draw.

Meanwhile, Sohail Abbas proved yet again why he is considered the world's best drag flicker by scoring four goals in Pakistan's 7-0 thrashing of Egypt in a Pool A match.

Three of Abbas's goals came from his deadly drag-flicks from penalty corners while the he scored the fourth off a penalty stroke against the hapless African champions.

Kashif Jawaid scored the first two goals for the side in the third and 12th minte as Pakistan got off to a great start, couple of days after losing their first tie against Germany.

Captain Nadeem Muhammed also joined in the goal feast with a field goal in the 15th minute before Sohail stamped his authority on the match.

The 23-year-old, who is the world's second highest goal scorer, sounded the board twice in each halves.

His goals came in the 30th, 33rd, 38th and 58 minutes to script a huge win for Pakistan.

The match wasnt convincing at all...
Anyways a win is a win...
I thought that in the last 15 secs we could have scored another goal coz we were in the 25 yards line of the south africans and baljeet singh dhillon showed no intention of scoring another, he just wanted to kill the last 15 secs and seal the match although one of the forwards was in the circle...
Such chances should be tried..
Who can forget sydney 2000 when if we had scored another goal in any of the matches we wud have qualified on superior goal difference...
Also coming back to the match against SA, i must say south africans are the best in the business of trapping the ball. They are simply awesome. I had heard about this but now i have seen this too...
And the most important point is that, I dont know how but there has been a dramatic turnaround in the india's penalty corner capabilities...good to see that..
If this continues we may just manage to beat australia...
Although being realistic i have to say that australians are definately a much superior side than the indians....
BEST OF LUCK TO INDIA.

Mourn this victory
Every Indian Hockey Fan should mourn the Indian performance against South Africa. Indians escaped with 4-2 margin, It was a pathetic display of Hockey by Indians, no defence, no coordination among forwards, poor trapping. India do'nt deserve to win any medal with this kind of performance. Pinning any hopes on this team with the current form is useless. Indians played South Africans as if they are playing against Dutch or Germany. It could have been a tennis like score had SA converted a couple of sitters courtesy Indian defence. There was no urgency and conviction by Indians after they equalized at 2-2. It was only in the dying minutes that Indians salvaged some common sense hockey.
It was not the ideal display however, Indians are still in fray. Now, they have to decide either to bank upon luck with current form or Hard work combined with common sense.
All the best India!!!

Food for thought Mr Revington! Perhaps you shouldn't have left some of your most experienced players behind?

frankie 100%
My fellow hockey friend i share same sentiments as someone said class is forever and form temporary. SA defence is suspect, finishing only Mr nicol (classy player) proving to be on form? Where is Jabba, Tosh, Taurus(clydeabrahams) we are going to regret it. The win against ARG was thanks to anotha classy playas Jacko and staniforth. Rev is i were you i start thinking of my resignation letter i.e intro and conclusion.

Frankie, get off your perch on the family tree and get behind the SA guys - remember many previous occasions when the players whose absence you are still mourning were part of the team and still matches were lost at the death ? - World Cup qualifier in KL 1997 & AllAfrica qualifier 2003 ? - because of those losses we weren't even at the big events - at least we're in Athens thanks to the players who went to Madrid.

to frankie and the coach
There's no doubt that we would have been better served by the 2 lads left home in SA. That said how the hell does he start (and finish) with Hibberd when Staniforth has had a stormer against Argentina. Lombe and company couldn't convert a shortie in 11 attempts but the Indians looked like scoring every time.

India's win
seeing all these comments, one can only note that most Indian Hockey fans are naive about the game by being quick to criticise the team. South Africa has come up by leaps and bounds - see the tough fight they gave Argentina and the Netherlands. All Indians are to blame for being cricket-crazy - who will take up any sport for the love of the game and the country only. There should also be financial rewrads. Our pampered cricketers get crores in endorsements and match fees for being no. 5 out of 9 teams in the world, whereas hockey is an international sport played worldwide. There are only about 10 astroturfs in India and most of them are in poor condition, how can new players train on this surface? Schools only play cricket where is the talent or pool of new players. If Dhanraj had played cricket he would have earned about 50 crores by now, with hocket he still has to travel by train and autos.
C'mon guys support your team even if they lose, let's look at the future hockey is our national sport and more money should be pumped in - maybe the cricket borad should give 10% of revenue earned for hockey development, free hocket sticks should be given to schools etc, then we can look to the future, meanwhile let us salute our hockey stars, who still live like beggars and are treated so also.

Jag - The debate before the tournament was that certain players made choices which resulted in them being excluded from the Games. All agreed that they had to live with the consequences of their decision.

Likewise, Revington has to live with the consequences of HIS decision as well. Are you sugggesting the this type of responsibility does not extend to coaches and officials? You seem like a perfect candidate for the next SAHA president with an attitude like that.

Which part of my comment said that I did not support the PLAYERS - have I suggested that any of them cost us or that they were not good enough for the team? I feel desperately sorry for the guys as they are expected to compete at the highest level with a squad missing 4 experienced players. The German starting line-up averages 170 caps per man (BBC commentator) yet we choose to leave similar experience at home.

Forget about Twosh as forward play doesn't seem to be a major problem (although his experience from 198 games would surely help) but our defence could undoubtedly have done with Jubba's experience. We have managed to turn 2-0 into 2-4 against India and 2-1 into 2-3 against the Dutch. Once again we are left to lament about 'what if?'.

Thanks for mentioning KL and AAG because that backs up my point. We leave behind players that have experienced (and hopefully learnt from) the heartache of loosing at the death in games. Now we have given that sicking experience to a whole new bunch of players - way to go!

As the coach, Revington must bear TOTAL responsibility.

Complaining aganist India
Remember Neth beat SA only in the 69th minute, and were down 2-0 in the 23rd minute. No shame in India's win.

Support India !
I fully agree with Glenn. Hockey is very open today and any team can beat the other on a given day. I remember a lot of games in the near past when India dominated against the likes of Aus, Ger and Hol but still lost. So, we'll take this win and from what I've seen, the team is playing better and better, and gaining confidence especially by converting PCs. If you take a look at the past without Jugraj we used to miss most of our PCs. In any case, I believe, if we convert our PCs against Aus we'll beat them. After all, we've beaten them a few times during the last couple of years !

selection
there is a story doing the rounds tammo, that the keepers were being rotated - staniforth 1st & 3rd games, hibbert 2nd & 4th with the best player getting game 5. not sure if there is any truth in that?

as we have discussed how lack of experience has probably mitigated against us protecting our winning positions in the last 10 minutes, so the opposite has applied with both india and holland - experience has pulled them through to score the goals when they have been most needed.

one day . . .

Frankie...Either see a psychologist or stop posting to this web site. You are an embarrasment to SA Hockey and to your brother.

The venom that has spilled out of your mouth since the team was announced excluding mike is disgraceful. Justin has had the balls to post to the site claiming personal responsibility for his situation, Mike has not. You are conducting a smear campaign against the coach that is of the lowest form of insult possible and are dragging down your strong and respected family name.

Twoshie made decisions that were in the interest of his own bank account and not for the greater cause. He chose to be arrogant enough to assume that by excusing himself for greater personal gain from 8 months of international hockey development, he would surpass all the other players who stuck in during the whole process. I only hope you did not talk him into the situation he found himself in...maybe you did and thats why you are so bitter.

As for Jubba....I would like to see if he would have coped in the Athens heat!

Get over it Frankie...at least for Twoshie's sake so he can put this behind him...its really tired.
