Unparalleled Hockey Coverage from Athens

Worldhockey.org, the official site of the International Hockey Federation, will provide unparalleled coverage of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games hockey competition. The competition, which starts on Saturday 14 August runs until Saturday 28 August, will see the best men's and women's teams in the world compete for Olympic Gold.

Worldhockey.org will host live match text commentary direct from Athens of the critical matches throughout the Olympic Games. Coverage will also include all latest scores, pool tables, goalscorer statistics plus a top quality Photo Gallery capturing the memorable moments of the tournament.

To complete the service to hockey enthusiasts worldwide, the FIH will produce a daily World Hockey Online bulletin of the top stories and news from Athens available for free online at www.Worldhockey.org.

71 matches will be played with a total of 352 players taking part while 70 tournament officials will make sure they keep to the rules. FIH President Els van Breda Vriesman said, "Our athletes will showcase the best in world hockey as they battle for Olympic medals. The Olympic Games are always the pinnacle of any athlete's career, and I have every confidence that this
XXV111 Olympiad will be an immense success for all involved. For those who do not have the privilege to be here in Athens, we will provide the best possible coverage of the Games for hockey fans on www.worldhockey.org."

Ostrich FIH
It is a joke that FIH is touting text messages and match results as
"unparalleled" coverage. True it is a giant leap for FIH, but come on..
calling it unparalleled coverage etc exposes FIH as the ostrich it is
and the FIH bosses as the cave men/women they are - completely
out of touch with reality.

These guys dont even allow video cameras/third umpire in such as
fast moving game, change rules at the last minute to benefit a couple
of teams without even trying out the rules (so blatantly shameful isnt it).
Having seen the game over the last 20 years, I could say that FIH has
damaged the game substantially.
This has happened to the point where the game is losing support rapidly
in countries where hockey used to be a much loved game. Other games
such as cricket are gaining fast and taking away players, money, and
popular support.

American coverage
NBC, in the States, has the hockey schedule on their Athens website. Unfortunately, for Canadians these games are on U.S. Bravo and MSNBC mostly, which we can't access. Be interesting to see if any Hockey gets on the main NBC network?

You don't really expect free web video feeds, do you?
It is unlikely technology is the major reason behind only having text updates of games available on the web from the FIH.

With the $$$s involved in TV rights to the Olympics, I doubt the networks (NBC and such) would be jumping over themselves to (a) give away the footage required for a live video feed of games, or (b) see the Olympic organisers give it away after they have paid big bucks for it.

For the FIH to provide video footage, they would have to
- get offside with the same TV networks everyone wants them to deal with for more coverage of non-olympic hockey,
- pay the $$$s required to obtain the footage,
- pay the $$$s required to supply live video feeds to the number of hockey lovers around the world who wish to view the footage
... and due to the available TV coverage around the globe, would there be enough people willing to pay a subscription fee to make the whole exercise cost effective?

... because we would all prefer the FIH spend what money they have on what their "core business" is, and thats administering the world's hockey.

(And a free live video feed… you’ve got to be serious… who pays for that?)

Actually in Vancouver Bravo is a Tier 2 service on your cable package through Shaw. In the same group as CNN and Discovery. MSNBC is a digital option. So you can actually watch Olympic FH in Canada.

hockey must be bigger in the world !!!!
The only way is , a worldcup with more Teams !! I favourite a WC with 24 Teams ...the best 8 teams PLUS the following best team of each kontinent should be qualified for the following Olympia !! A worldcup with more Teams is the only way to break out our fieldhockey in the world !! And this following Olympia tournament would be a tournament of the "creme--de--la--creme" .

Hockey
To hockey

do you think that any team can compete in the O.G.
everyone there has to qualify!!!
Qualifying means being in the top (in hockeys case 10 or 12 in the world)
for swimming it is by beating the qualifying time.
The greek men had not played in a top competition to date. because they are the hosts does not give them (anymore) the right to compete.
