DVDs....
Kiwi,
Good question. I wonder why we don't have dvd's of the games
sold to the public.
I was personally there in Amstelveen for the Champions Trophy
games and all the matches were recored on digital media by
the official TV broadcasters. All particiapating teams were handed
out official dvds after every game (for post-game assesment),
so that teams didn't have to have their personal crew filming the
games. So, there did exist master dvds but they were not for sale.
It's a matter of getting the right vendor to cut DVDs. I personally
prefer dvd's and they're the way to go with their quality and
longevity. I don't even remember the last time I bought a VHS tape!
Perhaps it's got to do with piracy (excellent quality illicit copies of
dvds can be easily made) which probably prevents FIH from releasing
DVDs to the public.
just my 2c worth.

DVD Production
You are correct that full Digital masters are available. They were used to produce these videos.
There are no issues regarding piracy from the FIH. They want to promote the game and they are in agreement that DVD's are the way to go.
It all comes down to the amount of video that can fit onto a DVD. The 2 VHS tape set includes 4 full games and over 360 minutes of coverage. It is the most economical way of distributing match coverage. There are two formats for DVD: DVD-5 can hold 130 minutes and DVD-9 can hold 240 minutes.
So there are a few ways to go producing a DVD for a 6 team tournament like the Champions Trophy.
Put 20 minutes of highlights of six matches onto a DVD-5. Retail Cost $40 USD.
Put 60 minutes of coveraged of four matches onto a DVD-9. Retail cost $50 USD.
Put 40 minutes of hightlights of six matches onto a DVD-9. Retail cost $60 USD.
Put six full matches onto a 2 DVD-9 set. Retail cost $90 USD.
Put nine full matches onto a 3 DVD-9 set. Retail cost $120 USD.
Personally I think that there should be coverage of six matches and that the price should not exceed $60.
Then for a World Cup with 12 teams we must provide coverage of at least 8-10 games.
The aim is to put the 2004 Champions Trophies onto DVD and I'm leaning towards the 40 minutes of coverage of six matches.

Hari Kant: DVDs of CT2003
Thanks for your detailed explanation of the economics behind
the VHS/DVD production for retail sales.
I'd prefer the 40min. highlights * 6 games = 240 min. on a DVD-9,
but the price ($60) appears a bit steep. Perhaps, if you bring the
price down, your volume sales will go up.......

The problem with highlights tapes is that we all look out for different things when watching, and these tapes tend to focus on goals beyond all else. Fine if you're a striker, but for those of us who enjoy midfield skills or tough tackling at the back, these highlights are often disappointing.
I'm prepared to bet you that if you and I sat down and watched any game together, we would pick 10 very different highlights.
Ask people on the front page whether they would rather see highlights of more games for less money or fewer full games for more money. It would be a useful poll.
On a separate point, does anyone know if it will be possible to get hold of tapes/DVD of full games from the upcoming Olympics? My understanding is that an enormous amount of the hockey will be broadcast around the world, but that each of us is reliant on our domestic broadcaster. So the BBC will no doubt show the GB games, but are very unlikely to show Oz v Neth or Kor v Pak - to take two examples of tasty pool games. I am sure that this situation is mimicked around the world.
For those of us who love watching international hockey (regardless of whether our home nation is competing), it would be great to be able to get hold of the games which our domestic broadcaster does not show. My understanding is that this is very difficult to do after the games since all footage is the property either of the Olympic organisation (who do not produce tapes of individual sports for commercial distribution) or the host broadcaster, who tend not to be inclined to reply to requests from individuals for footage.
Might it be possible for those of us who use this website to club together to record and share games shown by our domestic broadcaster? In that way we might be able to produce a library of almost every game in the tournament for no cost.
If anyone else would be interested, please post and we'll sort something out.

Interesting
Back to my student years, I remember making video copies of telecasted international matches... We have full TV coverage for hockey, fortunate for an international hockey fan like me! The last one being the Olympic Games in Sydney.
Then, after the Sydney Olympics my video recorder broke down and the dvd age came in, the video tapes remain in my closet for years and my recording hobby ended!!! Pity because there were some more telecasted (live or recorded) games after that and we are going to have good coverage for Athens too (Though we didn't qualify)
I haven't watch my recordings ever seen and it would be a pity if I dump them. (It must've been mouldy by now)
If anybody can salvage something for the tapes, do share.
Cheers
