THE FINAL:
ARGENTINA 4 UNITED STATES 1 (HT 2-0)
PlanetFieldHockey Player of the Game: Vanina Oneto, Argentina

THE OVERVIEW:
Argentina made this game look much easier than their previous 4-1 victory over the USA at this tournament. The South Americans came out flying and didn’t let up for the entire first half, attacking the US defence from all angles. Cecilia Rognoni was dangerous with the long ball from the back, and when the US shut this option down, Argentina went through Luciana Aymar and their midfielders. The US had trouble maintaining strong passing possession from their own end into Argentinean territory. Immediately after the interval in the 36th minute, Argentina scored their third goal – a real setback for the US. And although the USA bounced right back with a goal of their own through Kelli Gannon, they never had the sustained attack they needed to turn the game around.

THE WORDS:
Vanina Oneto, #9 - Striker, Argentina
“I think we played better (than Argentina’s last game against the USA). I think we played almost the whole match today, except for maybe one or two points.”
“We had a great attitude to play today – more aggressive – we played well the whole first half. They didn’t know how to get out of their end – they were suffocated, and this made it hard for them to attack.”
“We are always happy to win a tournament – the only thing is we are worried about our teammate“ (Soledad Garcia was taken to hospital to have tests on her knee after an awkward fall near the end of the game.)

Peggy Storrar, #4 - Goalkeeper, USA
”We came out really flat tonight. Their first half was good, ours was bad. The first goal straight away in the second half killed us.”
”It was fun to get lots of shots – not fun to lose though.”
”We were really soft in the circle defensively and they were really hard.”
“They (Argentina’s forwards) play really high and get the ball through to them. They always seem to be attacking in numbers.”
“It was a fun tournament. It was disappointing to lose and give up the chance to go directly to the World Cup, but France (the WC Qualifier) will be good.”

3RD/4TH PLACE
CANADA 6 URUGUAY 0 (HT 1-0)
PlanetFieldHockey Player of the Game: Aoibhinn Grimes – Canada

THE OVERVIEW:
Canada ran away with this game in the second half, getting stronger as the game went on. They finished with three goals in the last five minutes, Aoibhinn Grimes capping off a hattrick with a flick over the keeper Uruguay had come out fast and played an excellent first half, perhaps taking Canada a little by surprise. Ana Hernandez led the charge, and Uruguay created several corners and scoring chances. The Canada held them off though, and worked a neat penalty corner deflection for a goal in the 26th minute. The second half, Uruguay ran out of steam, and Canada went from strength to strength. The final five minutes was the perfect end to Coach Dru Marshall’s last game as Coach. Michelle Bowyer scored a spectacular shot into the roof of the goal in the last minute of the game.

THE WORDS:
Dru Marshall, Coach, Canada
“It was a good final half – a good last five minutes. We saw some stuff that we have been working on for a long time.”
”The kids weren’t going to be denied today. I’m proud of what they’ve done today.”
“I’ve seen some of the best hockey they have played for four years here. The US game was the best game I have seen them play.”
“Michelle Bowyer’s goal was a good punctuation mark at the end of the game.”
“This team has a lot of heart. They are one of the fittest teams here. I know how hard they’ve worked. And they are starting to believe in themselves. You could see that in the game today.”

Lauralee “Jumbo” Kopeck, #13 Canada
“It was a tight first half. We were lucky not to be scored against first. The warm up was not as good as usual. It was hot and draining.”
“We have no idea about our preparation for France. We have a new coach, and maybe new players and staff. This is an end and a start.”

Bettiana Ceretta, #3 Uruguay
”We left everything on the field. I am not happy to lose this game, but I am happy to have come to the tournament and get 4th place. As long as you put everything out on the field.”
“Today we had a good first half – we tried so hard to score, and because of that, Canada had space to attack. They had two-on-ones – and we couldn’t close the space.”
“On our penalty corners, we had problems with the field. The turf is very bumpy – we couldn’t stop the ball well.”
”With this result everyone at home is talking about us – the newspapers. This is the first time, and now every result is in the newspapers, and lots of comments.”

5TH/6TH
JAMAICA 2 MEXICO 0 (HT 1-0)
PlanetFieldHockey Player of the Game: Sharee Russell, Jamaica

THE OVERVIEW:
This game was close throughout as far as the scoreline goes, but Jamaica had the better of the game. Sharee Russell was dynamic in attack for the home side. She scored the first goal in the 19th minute on a long breakaway run, taking the goalkeeper to one side and sliding it underneath her – an expertly-taken goal. Jamaica had the better of the rest of the game, taking the play to Mexico, but didn’t seal the victory until the 66th minute, when Chantel Russell knocked a deflection in by the post, to the delight of the home crowd.

THE WORDS:
Tasha Cooke, #7 Jamaica
”As the tournament progressed, our standard of play has improved – our passing, running off the ball – and we created a lot of scoring opportunities.”
“This tournament has done a lot for Jamaican hockey. Not many people play here, so something like this brings a lot – high quality hockey. It also allows the spectators to see where we’re at and where we need to be.”
“It was the first international tournament on this turf. It is a big event. So now at least when we seek support and sponsorship, people will be more willing to support us.”
“It has shown us that when we do the small things right, they work. So it is encouragement for us – we see that what if we do these things more consistently, we can be successful.”

66 – Chantel Russell – Jam

Gentlemen, your site is great. There is one addition to the game data that would be nice and that would be the names of the officials for the games. I know that players are very important but there are a group of people who continue to be in the background without whom the game could not be played and that is the umpires and technical officials. It would be nice to know who umpired which games and the names of the jugdes and TD for the game to recognize their contribution to the sport.

It would also be nice to see some interviews of officials to get their opinions of the tournament.
