FIH Major Events Awarded to China and USA

FIH Major Events Awarded to China and USA Panama Hockey Association to become 115th FIH member association

The Samsung Hockey World Cup Qualifier, Men, 2006 and the Rabobank Hockey Champions Challenge, Women, 2005 have been awarded to the Chinese and United States hockey associations respectively, it was decided at the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) Executive Board meetings in Auckland, which concluded on Saturday 27 March. The Samsung Hockey World Cup Qualifier will take place in Guang Zhou province, China in March 2006 and the Rabobank Hockey Champions Challenge in Virginia Beach, USA in June 2005.

Els van Breda Vriesman, FIH President, commented, “Both event awards signify FIH’s intention to stage our major events in key geographic territories.
The importance of hockey development in China does not need reiteration ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and we are delighted to accept a strong bid from China.”

“Similarly, the USA has very strong participation in women’s hockey and it is both FIH’s and USFHA’s intention that the Rabobank Hockey Champions Challenge will add significant impetus to our common objective of hockey development there. In addition to the unquestionable attraction of both countries, both bids were of excellent quality and we thank and commend the Chinese and United States hockey associations for the hard work and consideration invested in the bids.”

Panama Hockey Association to become 115th FIH member association

The Panama Hockey Association has received FIH Executive Board approval for their application for provisional membership of the FIH. Its full membership is expected to be approved at the FIH Congress in Leipzig, Germany later this year, bringing the total number of FIH members to 115. In close cooperation with the Continental Hockey Federations the FIH is focused on the continuing growth of hockey worldwide.

Well done USFHA - now some international hockey can be seen in the USA. This should be around the time of the Futures tournament. A perfect opportunity for the many contributors to these discussion boards to SHOW UP and actually see the USA play international matches in a FIH tournament -- and in their own country!!

Forget College
This is international! The woman need to learn how to play on the intrenational stage. The College Ranks are not a comparison to what they need to accomplish. Tne world surpassed the US College ranks decades ago. Lets hope the US woman and men who witness this event can learn about hockey as a world game. USFHAA has become a promoter of NCAA Hockey not World Hockey. Hopefully this event can help the USFHAA undersatnd that.

Well lets hope that the US womens team that competed in Auckland can stick together to compete at home in this tournament. No doubt some will move on after narrowly missing the olympics, but if a nucleus of players stay together, the US may boast a strong team to actually contest the home tournament.

reason
well main reason is that china who may not deserve a place on qualifier can play qualifer and same goes for USA ALSO.

WHAT A JOKE
Better to award to country which can be in qualifier like
malaysia , pakistan , south korea, .
what happens if USA qualifies automatacaaly, does qualifier shifts to Argentina or salvedore or canada

Read the posting you are responding to. It says in Asia, not in the world.

Well, I suppose the second part of your post really tells us how much you know about hockey, huh?!? Just a hint: the US were not awarded a WC qualifier, but the Champions Challenge. And they CANNOT possibly qualify for it automatically, because one qualifies for the CC through the Olympics, and the US doesn't get to go there.

The real reason
Oh, and btw, the real reason why China got the WC qualifier is because they bid for it. The FIH COULD NOT award the tournament to Pakistan or Korea or another country you see worthy of hosting it because none of these countries put in a bid for it!!!

The FIH had put out the invitation for bids ages ago, but noone put in any bids for the steep hosting fee - so a while ago the FIH basically said - if not in these words - that they were going to give the qualifying tournaments to the first applicants. Which they did, and that's how China got the qualifier.

Read other comments then you comment. India is not the biggest foool, I am sure the Indian know what they are doing. As what Asianhockeyfan said, let's support them to create the sport to be more people know the game.

While there are complaints about China's involvement... not one entry has addressed the issue that there is going to be a FIH major tournament at a site that is essentially just a parking lot with a couple of really big sheets of carpet and fences to keep balls on said piece of carpet.

I'm wondering if the FIH is looking to prove the incompetence of the USFHA, considering that there are no facilities there for fans... guess we'll crowd onto that little hill and view from there.

If the FIH wants to run a first class tournament, then they need to look into the new U of Maryland turf, or somewhere away from what will amount to a trailer park.

Can someone please tell me if the Men's WC Qualifier is in China during March 2006 as the article suggests - what dates are they as the FIH has the Commonwealth Games listed for 15-29(?) March 2006?
