KARACHI: Asian hockey officials will know that how many teams can compete in next year’s Junior World Cup from their continent at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Executive Board meetings in Auckland, New Zealand, next month.

Brigadier (retd) Musarratullah Khan, secretary of the Pakistan Hockey Federation and member of the FIH Executive Board, said here on Friday that the FIH is likely to decide the format for the 2005 Junior World Cup to be held in the Dutch city of Amstelveen next August during the Auckland meeting scheduled to take place from March 24 to 26.

The Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) have been pressing the FIH to decide the format of the Junior World Cup shortly as Asia’s continental qualifying rounds are to be held in April.

Pakistan will be hosting the 2004 Junior Asia Cup in Karachi from April 20 to 29 and the event will serve as the continental qualifiers for the Junior World Cup. Ten of Asia’s top teams will compete in the unior Asia Cup which will be the first of the five continental qualifying rounds for the Junior World Cup this year.

The FIH granted three berths to Asia for the previous edition of the Junior World Cup that took place in the Australian city of Hobart in 2001. At that time the AHF asked the FIH to allot four places to Asia but the federation decided against it.

Musarrat who will be attending the Executive Board meetings in Auckland said that the Board will discuss the FIH’s strategic programme besides taking a detailed look at the preparations for this year’s Olympic Games in Athens.

Junior Worl Cup Qualification process
Can Hari or anyone else confirm what the qualifying process for Junior world cup actually is. I assume that a certain allotment of teams from each continental qualifying series will go. However, for those that miss out, is there any other form of qualification option? As an example, NZ Junior women, having lost in the Oceania qualifying series against Aust in 2001, only got to attend junior world cup when Zimbabwe withdrew, and then proceeded to finish 5th.

This is a somewhat unique problem for Oceania, given that there are really only the two strong hockey nations, one of whom is consistently top 4-5 (Aust) and the other who has the potential to be top 5, but then runs the risk of missing out consistently from these types of events, whereas other nations with a larger number of qualifiers have the potential to secure 1 of 2 or 3 spots.

Is there a second chance for the nations that don't qualify in the initial round?
